I do like winning but I think you underestimate draft pick order. Look at the Giants' history the past 15 or so years while picking toward the top versus middle and bottom. I think there is some significance. But having a solid scouting crew is very important. Poor scouting can squander a good ability to pick well. And what I do think makes the baseball draft different from the NBA is there has to be a lot of development. That makes it a lot easier to screw up a player before he ever makes it to the big leagues.This is how baseball breaks your heart. You win 3 in a row, look good doing it, and you think 'ok these guys are pretty good, they can go on a run and compete'. But they aren't, it's just baseball and in a long season even mediocre teams will look sharp for a few games here and there.
Still, winning is better than losing. And don't give me that draft pick shit this isn't the NBA, draft order is close to meaningless most years.
