94? Uh, no. He hit 93 maybe twice. Sat at 90-91 most fastballs. And he only seems to want to throw them, and changeups.

It's not jumping off a cliff to recognize the changes he is going through. 2008-9 Timmy is gone forever. 2012 Timmy might turn into a good 2nd starter. In fact that's the way I'd bet, that he will get better and be a solid starter. But he's not an ace anymore and that's just plain simple as that.

:pout:

From Pavlovic last night:

Lincecum’s stuff was actually really good. Just ask Matt Kemp, who struck out three times. Lincecum hit 93 mph multiple times in the first inning, when his fastball averaged 92.4 mph. It had been 89.8 in his previous six starts.

I guess "multiple times in the first inning" could TECHNICALLY be "maybe twice" for the game, but that's not the way to bet. I'm going with Kuip on this one.

According to Kuip, he hit 94 a couple of times. Regardless, he's throwing in the 90s again. I think he's a lot closer to the 2010 Timmy than the 2011 Timmy.

I'm unwilling to concede that he's not an ace anymore.

You're kind of all over the emotional map lately, tzill. You were ripping into Cain the other day for walking Reyes, putting that game all "on Cain", after he went 8 innings, walked 1, and lost 2 - 1.

I am completely hoping you are right on this...it just doesn't feel like it.

This year's team will do that to the best of us...

One gun had him at 94, the nbc gun had him at 93 (on the same pitch), pitchfx had him at 93 (92.9 actually).

I don't understand this line of thinking. I think he could just as easily turn back into an ace as well as he could stay the way he currently is going. If Timmay can get his mechanics right and also turn his changeup back into an appetizing pitch, he's right back to being dominant (2 things that aren't out of the realm of possibility). You don't need to throw 93-94MPH to be a good starter in this league. Cain and Bum throw 90-92. Kershaw the other night was throwing a lot of 91-92MPH fastballs. Timmay's problem is, he starts from behind in the count too often due to his mechanics/control (or lack thereof) and then he doesn't have the 94MPH fastball anymore as his "get out of jail free" card. If he can get back to throwing strikes, getting ahead in the count and using his slider and changeup effectively, he's an Ace again. He still has plenty of movement and deception. Obviously there are some "ifs" in there, but I think it's kind of shortsighted to just say "he's not an ace anymore and that's just plain and simple".

I don't know what the future holds.....but I do know that Timmy still has at the very least some of "it" (ace stuff) after watching him pitch last night. He made a .400 hitter K 3 times and look pretty foolish to boot. He also got caught leaving too many pitches up and got beat by a 4th OFer.

EDIT: All this said, I'm glad Timmay didn't just ink a 5 year $100+Million contract in the offseason. :heh:

One last thing, from Pavlovic:

Chad Billingsley put 11 Giants on base in the first four innings last night. Two of them scored.

That's astounding.

11 men on base
2 scored
2 thrown out on base
---------------------------------
7 left on the base paths.

So who can you expect to drive the ball from last night's game? Only Melky, really.

Blano - on base guy
Burriss - slap hitter
Melk - check
Posey - weaker than Burriss right now
Belt - not showing it.
Nate - still trying to find himself
Arias - slap hitter
Crawford - just hoping to make contact
Timmy - butcher boy, at best.

With that lineup, leaving a lot of men on base was a best case scenario.

Well said. To be an ace, it all starts with fastball command.

I don't think that's quite accurate. I will admit that in the moment I was upset with Cain. Obviously, any time a starter goes 8 and gives up 2 ER, he's more than done his job. I was just frustrated in the moment b/c of the Panda injury and the walk to Reyes.

Yeah - who would have thought that the Giants could manage to get two runs across the plate with RISP? See, they are turning it around, finally!
