In a move that suggests Patrick Willis isn’t ready to practice due to his hamstring injury, the 49ers signed linebacker Michael Wilhoite to the practice squad today and released running back Ian Johnson from the unit.

Willis, who has a Grade 2 hamstring strain, did not practice last week and missed San Francisco’s 21-19 loss to Arizona, the second game he’s missed in his five-year career.

Wilhoite (6-0, 240), 25, signed with the UFL’s Omaha Nighthawks as an undrafted free agent this year. He was a three-year starter at Division II Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., where he was a teammate of Niners wide receiver Joe Hastings, another member of the practice squad.

In 44 games, Wilhoite had 211 tackles, three interceptions and was an honorable-mention all-conference pick as a senior. He began his career as a safety and missed the 2009 season due to a stress fracture in his right shin.

Johnson was signed to the practice squad on Sept. 12.
