Overreact much?

@MaioccoCSN 14m

The Chris Cook signing does not eat much into the 49ers' cap space is not likely to take the place of any other notable free-agent deals.

Don't have any problem with this type of move. You can pretend he isn't even there. Can still sign another higher priced FA CB and definitely doesn't do anything to stop us from drafting a CB very high. This move won't even preclude us drafting another CB in the mid-rounds on top of the high pick. Expect them to throw everything possible at the wall and see what sticks. If he ends up coming out of it still on the roster, great. Otherwise good luck finding a spot on another team.

Hmmm....little hit to cap... Don't know... Hope it won't deter our draft attention to cb

So true, it's like he's trying to catch lightening in a bottle.

Well, it's worked out pretty well for him/us. Rogers, Whitner, and Dorsey have all been major contributors on our D. Even Ginn was a huge part of our 2011 success.

enough of this avg to below avg pick ups at the CB position.

I mean, entering FA, we only had three on the roster. So we needed numbers if nothing else. I've got to think we'll still look at CB early in the draft.

I see Cook and Wright likely competing for a single spot. If that.

6'2", 212, 4.45 forty, 38" vertical, 11' broad, solid quickness times. The kid's got talent, and CB play in the NFL can be very scheme specific. Not saying he'll be the next Rogers, but for what is likely a pretty reasonable contract, why not?

From ESPN Insider for whatever its worth

The San Francisco 49ers are getting a veteran cornerback. But they might not be done adding at the position before the draft.

Cook An NFL source confirmed the team will sign Minnesota free agent Chris Cook. He is expected to sign a team-friendly one-year deal. The team still has interest in Seattle cornerback Walter Thurmond, who is vising the 49ers on Friday, and have interest in retaining Tarell Brown.

Cook will battle for a roster spot. He has experience and at 6-foot-2, he is big for a cornerback. But he has struggled on and off the field at times. He has no career interceptions.

Still, the 49ers -- who added quarterback Blaine Gabbert and offensive lineman Jonathan Martin -- are banking they can salvage Cook's career. If not, the team doesn’t have much invested. ESPN analyst Matt Williamson thinks taking a flier on Cook is worth the 49ers’ while.

“He has a lot of talent,” Williamson said. “Maybe he can resurrect his career in San Francisco

MM tweeted that this signing will not effect any other signings that we could have on the table, basically taking perrish cox spot as the 5th guy

He is going to add depth at a position of need. It's not going to cost us Brown or Thurmond, so why not?

I thought only the too 51 signed counted against the cap. Assuming Cook signed a lower deal would he even cost anything? If so then I don't suppose it's much?
