Oddly enough this is a rare play that I think would have been penalized less severely if it were the regular season, which is usually the opposite of most suspensions. But because its the finals and the only remaining games for either team are vs each other, and because he put a player on an opposing team out for the remainder of the series with a (mildly) illegal hit, I think the league decided to crack down a bit harder than they otherwise would have since the end result still hurts Boston way more than it does Vancouver.
