When the beloved player you are trying to replace is known for reckless hustle on the field, you are going to feel the pressure to do the same. When its already been ingrained in you by multiple coaches, the situation becomes ripe for an injury such as this.

Or a simpler answer: you either play all out or you don't. Both are defensible attitudes. Mac plays all out because that's who he is.
