Yeah, it is called longevity. If you ask a baseball historian and you talk about home run hitters, it will take about 30 guys into even talking about Hank Aaron. There isn’t a single person that would ever put Hank Aaron on a Mt Rushmore, just like no one would ever say Pete Rose was the best hitter of all time. But there are plenty of people who will argue Sandy Koufax is the best pitcher of all time or Hack Wilson had the best offensive season ever.

i get what you are saying... but it is a little misguided... He lead the NL in HRs 4 times and was top ten 18 times... That is pretty elite... Longevity did make him the BEST EVER.... but without longevity he would still be one of the best HR hitters of all time...

Pete rose is a better example of longevity than Aaron is... There are a lot of all time greats that are more Longevity than all time... But Aaron is not the best example of this...

i would also claim the most UNDER-RATED all time great is Mike Schmidt... He is not considered a top 10 offensive player of all time... But he should....

Of course, .820 is much better than .757 but the thing I'm saying is similar about them is if you hack off the last 10 years of their careers those OPS numbers will be considerably higher.
Precisely why I pretty much ignore career rate stats, and count ow many seasons they achieved different milestones (WAR7 and how many times a player got 120+, 130+, etc OPS+).

Aaron doesn't really have the eye popping 1994 Frank Thomas or 2004 Barry Bonds kind of season, but he was pretty much a lock for 7+ WAR for about two decades. That's an all-time great.

Take out his 755 Homer's and he still has 3000 hits. He is the all-time leader in total bases.

I was looking through some stats at Baseball Reference and found that Johan Santana has more than twice as much black ink in his stats than Bob Gibson, Hoyt Wilhelm, Jim Kaat, Bert Blyleven, Chief Bender, Jack Morris, Bob Gibson and Don Newcomb and more black ink than Don Drysdale, Catfish Hunter, Jack Chesboro, Jim Bunning, Gaylord Perry, Tom Glavine, Kid Nichols, Ted Lyons, John Smoltz, Old Hoss Radbourn, Mordicai Brown, Fergie Jenkins, Juan Marichal, Burleigh Grimes, Early Winn, and Whitey Ford. All of those pitchers are in the Hall of Fame and Johan dropped off after 1 year on the ballot.

He had the bulk of his success in baseball Siberia. It isn’t surprising that he would be overlooked. I suspect he will make it eventually through the vet committee.

if Koufax is a HOFer (and I don't have a problem with him being in), I don't see how you don't put Santana in. they both had a 156 ERA+ over their best 6 year spans (Santana 03-08, Koufax 61-66) and Santana was a much better pitcher outside of that than Koufax.

Throwing over 300 innings in 3 of his last 4 seasons is insane and not to mention 40 career shutouts……tough comparison to make between an absolute freak when healthy……

Different eras though. Credit to Koufax for having the seasons he did while throwing that much, but there's no way anyone's coming close to 300 innings ever again in this era of pitcher usage and I doubt even the likes of Koufax/Gibson/Carlton are allowed to pitch that many innings. In fact, it could be a long time before we even see a 250 inning season again.

Can't say I love how starters are used in today's game.

Kind of my point though, they burned him out and he was SO dominant throughout 300+ inning seasons….who could even think of putting up numbers like that today with that many innings pitched? Guys throwing 175-200 now aren’t even that dominant in a smaller sample regardless of different eras……

I think Koufax benefited by going out on a high note. 3 Cy Youngs in his last 4 seasons with 97 Wins, drop the mic and get out.

The results will be announced soon (not sure what time).

According to the tracker, 4 players are getting in.

Beltre (99.1%)
Mauer (83.3%)
Helton (82.4%)
Wagner (78.2%)

However, the tracker is typically more optimistic than the actual votes. Because of this, I think Wagner falls short while Helton and Mauer are toss ups. Beltre was always looked upon as an easy-in.

If Mauer gets in, I think that pretty much guarantees Posey gets in on his first ballot. Mauer’s omission was always my reservation on Posey getting in. They are pretty close comparisons.
