i'm so fucking sick of the concept of "first ballot HOFer"

either you think they should be in or they shouldn't. I don't look at a player and think "oh, he should have to wait until the 7th year". it's one of the many things wrong with baseball's HOF selection process.

i agree... players that deserve should just get in... problem is that when you have a system that makes it a big deal, you have to point out when they make a mockery of it...

i hope you are joking.... that sounds like you are spending a lot of money on making an app that nobody would ever use...
I wouldn't joke about something of this magnitude. I take that to mean you're "out" when I start trying to get the next round of funding?

I never felt I was watching a future HOFer when I was watching Mauer play.

ah yes, because catchers hitting for a 135 OPS+ (2004-13, not including his non-catching seasons) are a dime a dozen.

You never know how good the good times were until they are over. But when your catcher wins his third batting title you gotta think there's at least a chance he's gonna grab some votes.

And as mentioned, there are not many catchers in the Hall. So when someone comes along that's strong there they have a shot. Another reason I knew Posey would go in first ballot.

Edit: looked it up, actually there's a few more there than I thought (20)

And it's more evenly distributed than I expected

By position, there are: 84 pitchers, 20 catchers, 27 first basemen, 20 second basemen, 19 third basemen, 26 shortstops, 23 left fielders, 24 center fielders, 27 right fielders, 3 designated hitters, 23 managers, 10 umpires and 40 executives/pioneers.

not many catchers have an OPS+ higher than Mauer (and that's with his numbers being bogged down by 2014-18), and even fewer than Posey (granted he has less PA than Mauer). they're two of the greatest hitting catchers, the only one I'd say was head and shoulders above them was Piazza.

I looked it up though, I was wrong about very few catchers in the Hall. But I agree Mauer belongs.

And unlike Piazza both Mauer and Posey were excellent defensively

Yeah Mauer has really good stats as a catcher. It's weird that he dropped off so much as a 1B/DH. Maybe it's a mental thing. Regardless, Mauer and Posey are both orders of magnitude better than McGuire

he did have a concussion in late 2013 and experienced concussion symptoms in the following seasons (blurred vision from sunshine)

yeah, he took a foul tip to the mask from Ike Davis

The Twins moving him off C was defensible IMO.
I didn't remember that but that makes sense.

forget the stupidity of the difference between a first ballot HOFer and a standard HOFer....

i think most of us agree he deserves to be in the HOF or at least close enough not to question it,,,

But do you think he deserves to be a first balloter?? again, remember, the committee made it clear that there is a difference....

I personally have a big problem with the committee making a mockery of the system they created....

I get it but the committee has changed over the years so you have to expect new people to have a different take on things. Maybe the system is getting better. You can't go back in time and not make Gary Carter wait 6 years to get in. What's done is done.

true that there is a changing of the guard... but the old ways are still the majority... otherwise there would be no reason for ARoid, Bonds, and clemens not to be in the HOF already...

Mauer’s 124 OPS+ blows Posada’s 121 out of the water……

Only issues with Posada is he was very slow even by catcher standards, and he wasn't great defensively by any means. Certainly one of the best hitting catchers of all-time. I wouldn't argue with him getting in.
