And those are just athletes who won national acclaim as athletes. I could make a similar list of Gopher athletes who went on to national or even world acclaim as coaches.Sure. Several of them.
Bronko Nagurski, one of the greatest football players in all of history. Was inducted into both the cfb and the NFL football's Hall of Fames in each of those Hall's first classes. The Defensive POY award in college football is named after him, and he is still the only player ever to make All-American at two positions in the same season. And it wasn't the only sport he dominated as he won World Titles in Pro Wrestling as well. He's on every football expert's Mt Rushmore of the pre-NFL era of football history.
Neal Broten, one of the greatest and most accomplished American hockey players of all time. Helped the Gophers win an NCAA Title in 1979 before helping the US Olympic team win a Gold Medal in 1980 and then won the very first Hobey Baker Award as chk's best player in 1981. He later became the first American player to score 100 points in an NHL Season, and he was also the first American to score a hat trick in the Stanley Cup Championship series. and he was the first American to get to 1000 games played in the NHL.
Dave Winfield is considered by many to be one of the most highly accomplished and acclaimed athletes of all time. Winfield was ranked as The 3rd greatest athlete of all time by ESPN in 2004. He pitched and played outfield for the Gophers, was a starter on their Big Ten title winning team, and was drafted by 4 professional sports leagues, the NFL, the ABA, the NBA and of course MLB. He was the Padre's first pick in the draft and later became their first player ever to get inducted into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. The National Sports Review named Winfield their pick for #1 all-time Leftfielder and was also named as one of 28 players listed on the NCAA College World Series Legends team as he named the CWS MVP in 1973 even though his team did not win the Title.

Winfield was a 12 time MLB All-Star game player, was a 7 time Gold Glove winner and a 6 time Silver Slugger Award winner.
Or I could have named Paul Molitor, the only baseball player in history to get over 3000 hits, a career .300+ BA, 500+ steals and over 200 home runs, all while missing over 500 games throughout his career due to injuries. He is also just one of two players all time who got into the Hall of Fame and then went on to win Manager of the Year. I could go on about his 39 game hitting streak, his hitting .500 in the World Series, his earning a World Series MVP Award, and he made it onto the Major League Baseball All-Time team, too.

Patty Berg was considered the best female golfer of all time and possibly still is? I believe she still holds the record for the most Major Tourney wins with 15, and at least 60 wins in total, and she was a founding member and the first president of the LPGA and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. She won AP Female Athlete of the Year in 1938 and 1943, she won the Vare Trophy in 1953, was the LPGA's leading money winner in 1954, and in 1955 she was the Vare Trophy winner, the LPGA's leading money winner and was named AP Female Athlete of the Year as well, for the 3rd time, and in 1956 again won the Vare Trophy and in 1957 again was the LPGA's leading money winner. In 1963 she was awarded the Bob Jones Award, and in 1978 the LPGA established the Patty Berg Award, and in 1990 she was awarded the Patty Berg Award. Yeah, so another former Gopher with an Award given out in their honor. Some believe she did more to promote the game of golf than anyone else in history, estimates are that she put on over 16.000 clinics and believes she may have gotten over half a million people hooked on the game of golf.
Lindsey Whalen, is the winningest WNBA player in history, ranks 1st all time in assists in the WNBA playoffs history, and 3rd all time in assists in WNBA regular season play, and she is also a two time Gold Medal winner as well.
I've already mentioned Verne Gagne and Brock Lesnar.
Fortune Gordien won back to back to back NCAA Discus Natl Titles before competing back to back to back Olympics.
Sarah Bacon just won back to back to back NCAA titles in 1 Meter Diving, and also won the 3 Meter Diving NCAA Natl title as well her senior season(2021)
I could come up with a list of AT LEAST FIVE women's hockey players who are recognized as among the best to ever to play the game, including Natalie Darwitz who played on 3 Olympic teams, and was named Captain of one of those teams, and her college teammate Krissy Wendell made it to two Olympics being named Caption of one of those, then there is Amanda Kessel, with 2 Olympic team appearances so far, and she might make another in 2022? She was the leading point scorer both times, I believe along with Nora Raty & Hannah Brandt.
Ok, my bad. I should have said non women’s hockey. I will concede Bronco might be on someone’s Mt. Rushmore for a position. Everyone else, not even close.Sure. Several of them.

Well, the first TEN I listed were NOT women's hockey players you total psychopath. You obviously have no clue about hockey, because no American before the 21st Century comes even close to comparing to Neal Broten you moron. And how do Paul Molitor and Dave Winfield not qualify for you? lol OMFG, you are an insane psychopath or something??? And Patty Berg, explain to me how she isn't close? LMMFGDAO at you, you fucking loser. My guess is you never even made the varsity team or something, so now you got a beef with anyone and everyone that actually accomplished something?Ok, my bad. I should have said non women’s hockey. I will concede Bronco might be on someone’s Mt. Rushmore for a position. Everyone else, not even close.
And Washington St has produced what? The biggest embarrassment to the Heisman EVER??? lolOk, my bad. I should have said non women’s hockey. I will concede Bronco might be on someone’s Mt. Rushmore for a position. Everyone else, not even close.
You dumbfucks are responsible for Lavar Bell and his fucking circus??? lol Typical of WSU.And Washington St has produced what? The biggest embarrassment to the Heisman EVER??? lol

Yep, it was a complete abortion.Lol Bama 11/25 at the line.
Who?
Ricky Bell’s nephew?Lavar Ball played one season at Washington State before transferring to Cal State LA
No idea who Lavar Bell is though
Ball, Bell, Billy Bob whatever, the guy is a total tool, and some people, at least, at WSU claim him.Lavar Ball played one season at Washington State before transferring to Cal State LA

Either way, I'm still waiting for the long list of Hall of Famers who came out of Washington State.
Has WSU produced anyone of notability? A famous astronaut maybe, or some noteworthy politician, or a scientist who cured some kind of disease, anything?
I mean, the University of Minnesota only produces Miracles On Ice, members of The Right Stuff, 1/3rd of The Big Six of the Civil Rights Movement, a man who saved a Billion lives, the fastest man on earth, the fasted computers on earth, the first woman in space, we invented Viagra, the particle accelerator and the internet, basically, among many other fun things like the retractable seat belt, etc..I don't know about sports or academics but the most impressive alcoholics I've ever met went to Washington State
And U of Minnesota invented the cheap shot race riot in college basketball with the blacks assaulting the whites from the Ohio State team. DisgracefulI mean, the University of Minnesota only produces Miracles On Ice, members of The Right Stuff, 1/3rd of The Big Six of the Civil Rights Movement, a man who saved a Billion lives, the fastest man on earth, the fasted computers on earth, the first woman in space, we invented Viagra, the particle accelerator and the internet, basically, among many other fun things like the retractable seat belt, etc..
Without Minnesota, the whole world might be speaking German right now?
We invented cheerleading, the 4 man backfield, were the first dominant college basketball program in the nation and had more influence on creating the NBA than any other school, and were easily the most influential in making America a legitimate hockey country. I've already described how influential UMn was at making the US into a legitimate wrestling power.
We produced the first player to make it onto 3 straight All-American teams, the first professional football player, the first black football player in the Big Ten, the first black professional football player, possibly the first black hockey player, the first Hobey Baker Award winner, the first and only football player to make All-American at 2 different positions in the same season. UMn's produced the most NFL All-Decade team players and the most Highest Point scorers in the NFL as well. And it took a friggin world war to end the greatest cfb dynasty in all of cfb history, at least until Bama hired Saban, that is.
Former Gophers MADE UW and Oklahoma football into Natl Powers, same with Mich St, and Tulane went back to being a non power after it stopped hiring former Gophers. Former Gophers own both the nation's records for longest unbeaten streak and longest winning streaks. 1940 might be the only season in history where 2 grads from the same school both were named National Champs, and not sure if a year went by from 1947-1962 where a Gopher alum didn't have a team in the Top Ten of the cfb rankings. Had the AP poll started in 1921, that streak would have run through all of 4 decades and into a 5th seeing as former Gophers could claim as many as 20 cfb natl titles during those 42 years.
Only USC had more Natty's in baseball than Minnesota all the way through to 1977 when Zona St got their 4th and were #4 in Natties won all the way through to 2001. Arizona, won it's first 3 titles with the help of a former Gopher Jerry Kindall and didn't get their 4th title until 2012. Had the NCAA not changed college baseball to make it almost impossible for northern teams to compete(last northern team to win a title was OSU in 1966) Minnesota may have continued kicking arse in baseball.
UMn still ranks 8th all-time in the # of Baseball Natl Titles and Top Ten in producing MLB players. They rank 6th all-time in Wrestling Natl Titles, produces twice as many Heavyweight Titleists as anyone else, were ranked #7 at producing NBAers as recently as 2006. are still Top Ten all-time in Football Natl Titles, and, are #1 in producing NHLers and men's and women's olympic hockey players, are #1 in NCAA Hockey tournament appearances, both the men's and women's teams, are #1 in Frozen Four appearances and Title Game appearances in combined men's and women's hockey and also in winning Natl Titles, too.
