Of course it won’t.

But Silver needs to stop talking about this issue. Dropping games is the fix.

Agree that he needs to drop it. So do fans.

It doesn't matter if they reduce the number of games or not, teams will still rest players.

The earliest that I remember a team sitting players was in the 80's when Riley would start sitting the starters when the Lakers had locked up their playoff spot. It was done for both rest and to keep from losing a guy to injury in a meaningless game.

So, even if they reduce the number of games, teams will still sit stars.

This will never, ever happen.

But, the NFL’s regular season games matter because there aren’t very many. All available hands on deck every week.

In all honestly, the ideal length for the NBA regular season would be 43 games.

Home and home with all conference foes, 1 game from opposite conference alternating home dates every other season.

Healthy players wouldn’t sit because the games would matter.

But you are right, barring a drastic reduction that would never even be discussed, there is no solution.

true, and people have literally talked about it for decades...

Too much money wrapped into an 82 game schedule to ever change it...

We're lucky they aren't trying to add more games. lol

The main reason they've added the play in tournament is for the added revenue.

Yeah, they could easily get players on board for a shorter season too...until the players realized that their salaries would be adjusted down to fit the number of games.

Not necessarily.

At least not by as much as people assume.

Spread the games out more where teams play 2 games a week college style. Season still takes the same amount of time and you can make sure you have a game for each TV time slot every night of the week.

Yes, $ would still go down some. But if the quality of the product went up (which I think it would by a lot) the ratings jump might offset most of it.

I was not really into the play in tournament at first.

But it does a lot to address tanking too.

More teams in the mix for longer and more intrigue to the regular season because only 6 teams make the actual playoffs without the play in.

This would never happen, but if you did a home and home with all teams, then each team would have 58 regular season games. Championship is determined by best record. No playoffs. It would be like a basketball version of the English Premier League. The contending teams wouldn't sit players until they are too far behind the first place team.

Or you could go with the 43 regular season games like you have. Only top 2 teams from each conference make the playoffs. That would make the regular season very, very important, and the top teams wouldn't be resting players so often.

It only addresses tanking with the teams barely in the lottery. The teams that are truly tanking are unaffected.

I still don't like it. 82 games should be enough to earn a top 8 spot.

They wouldn’t need to.

But even then, why would that suck?

82 games is unnecessary

The overall number is unimportant IMO (within reason of course), just find a way to minimize back to backs or eliminate them altogether.

And then give LeBron and AD a few months to rest before holding the playoffs in one location. LOL.
