The move seems strange to me. Why not just non-tender him? Are they hoping that someone will be willing to trade for him now that he is on waivers?

It's definitely a head-scratcher. It would have made more sense if they had done it a few days ago. That would have given them time to field offers for a trade. But the non-tender deadline is Dec 2 (tomorrow). So he is most likely going to be released.

We don’t really need a “slightly above average OF”. Our OF is solid. In order to improve it, we would need an all star level player.

He would certainly upgrade the roster at least somewhat (especially if he DH continues in 2021). They could use another left-handed bat and he wouldn't be blocking any prospects (Ramos and Davis are right-handed and play a different position). If his $10m takes away from upgrading other parts of the roster, then I'd say hold off, but he would help the team win more games next year undoubtedly and doesn't cost any prospect capital.

Ideally the Giants get a left-handed CFer instead, like Jackie Bradley Jr., but he would probably be more expensive and long-term, which I'm not a big fan of. I'd prefer Rosario on a 1-year deal.

I saw that if he does clear waivers, and they do end up tendering him a contract, they could use that against him in arbitration that no other team wanted him, and perhaps drive the price down.

Today is the tender deadline. Giants don't have many huge decisions to make (most guys wouldn't be huge loses, and would likely be re-signed anyway). I'm interested in some of the big names out there. Rumors are swirling about Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber being non-tendered. That would be interesting.

A note on transactions ... this today in the SJ Mercury News : "Arbitration-eligible players have more than three years of major league service time but fewer than six, which is the point players reach free agency."

I royally pisses me off when "so-called" professionals get things so wrong. While it is true that all MLB player with more than three years of major league service time are arb-eligible, it starts before that (unless they recently changed the rules), somewhere around 2 3/5 of a year (even a bit before that, some years). Shame on "professional" reporters for getting that wrong.
