2019 Salary Cap set at $188.2M

According to Pelissero, the deal is worth more than a second-round tender, and since the 2019 NFL salary cap has been officially set at $188.2 million, here’s a look at what that figure may look like:

Lions not worried about shared background in competition for free agents

That said, good players are good players in almost any scheme, and it will be interesting to see how those New England connections come into play when Patriots edge defender Trey Flowers hits the open market in March.

Flowers, despite never topping 7.5 sacks in a season, is well-regarded because of his strong fundamentals, ability to consistently pressure the passer and defend the run. The 25-year-old defender could command a deal rivaling the five-year, $85 million pact Olivier Vernon received from the Giants three years ago.

The Lions, Dolphins and Titans all should be in the market for a pass-rusher, and Patricia and Miami first-year head coach Brian Flores both coached Flowers in New England in recent years.

I like the idea of landing Flowers and Honey Badger if possible. That would shore up two huge holes on defense now that Ziggy and Quin are out of here.

Finally

Detroit Lions, Romeo Okwara agree to a 2-year deal

Tom Pelissero‏Verified account @TomPelissero
The #Lions agreed to a two-year contract with DE Romeo Okwara, source said. Deal averages more than the 2nd-round RFA tender number with incentives on top. Locking up young player who flourished in first season under Matt Patricia with 7.5 sacks.

3:20 PM - 1 Mar 2019

Joel Corry‏ @corryjoel
With a 6.21% increase in the NFL salary cap to $188.2M, the RFA tenders are:

1st round: $4.407M
2nd round: $3.095M
Low: $2.025M

So the two sides have agreed on a two-year deal worth more than $6 million total. And by agreeing to terms, the Lions have made sure that Okwara is wrapped up for the next two years. Had the Lions chosen to give Okwara the second-round tender, opposing teams could have offered the defensive end a better contract, giving Detroit only a second-round draft pick in return.

Interesting. I didn't notice Okwara too much throughout the season but I was watching redzone a bit more after knowing the Lions sucked this year and the NFL becoming a commercial fest nowadays. Let's hope this pans out and we get some good production out of him.

Football Outsider proposes free agency fix to Lions pass rush problem

To start, Football Outsiders suggested the Lions make a splash signing in Washington’s Preston Smith. Washington is not expected to use the franchise tag on their 2015 second-round pick, meaning the opportunity is there.

As for the player himself, there’s a lot to like about him. Smith had the highest pressure rate of any player in 2017, per NextGenStats. He’s coming off his highest graded season per PFF (76.9, 19th among edge defenders). He’s long (34-inch arms) and tall (6-foot-6), and hasn’t missed a game since entering the league.

He’s also a great fit for Detroit.

“He might not be the pure pass-rushing devil Lions fans are hoping for, but his athleticism and schematic ambiguity are perfect for Patricia’s defense,” Football Outsiders wrote.

The issue here is that the Lions paid a lot of money for a jack linebacker last year. Devon Kennard wasn’t great in 2018, but he was certainly effective at times, and the Lions are committed to him financially for at least another season. Meanwhile, Smith is expected to pull in a pretty hefty contract. Spotract estimates something in the range of four years, $44.8 million to net Smith in free agency.

I have a feeling that Fat Pat and Quinn might try and fix the pass rush in more subtle ways this off-season and that they don't view pass rush as big of a need as the media does.

If they don't sign FA DE Trey Flowers then I'll agree that it will end up being like you said (more subtle ways).

7.5 sacks for a former somewhat seldom used player that ends up playing 70% of snaps is a great rotational piece at the very least. Should an injury occur, he can step right in again as a starter.

This is what I like about Hoodie and to some degree MP (as the latter is still unproven, imo, if he was mostly responsible for development of players) being able to mold players into what other coaches hadn't done.

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/s...owers-coming-off-shoulder-surgery/3049328002/

New England Patriots defensive end Trey Flowers, expected to be one of top names on the market when free agency opens later this month, is reportedly rehabbing from offseason shoulder surgery, according to ESPN.

The surgery has been classified as a cleanup procedure and is not considered serious.

Flowers, 25, has appeared in 45 of 48 possible regular-season games the past three years. He missed a game last season with a concussion and two in 2017 with a rib injury.

This is also the second time Flowers has had surgery on his shoulder. He missed the majority of his entire rookie season in 2015, appearing in just one game due to a shoulder injury.

Football players get hurt, and often require surgery. That's part of the business, but it can add some hesitation when that player is about to command a long-term deal worth north of $15 million per season.

It was a very minor surgery. Lions writers for the most part are drama queen hacks.

In the age old tradition of these boards I would like to point out that there is a new player available, and the Lions should sign him.

He's a good run blocker and an okay red zone target either way i still want us to draft a TE in the first 3 rounds.

Why?

Stafford has been notorious for targeting WR's over the TE position. No reason to waste a high draft pick on one.

Because Stafford isn't calling the shots and our HC and new OC want a run first team that uses blocking TEs

Stafford should go too no need to keep a QB that doesn't fit with the current administrations long term plans. Trade him and get Tyrod or trade up and get Murray.

I would love it if we got a 1st for Stafford.

Tyrod is booty.
I would like to take a flier on a mid round QB and give Stafford another year or 2 before throwing in the towel.

Tyrod played and protected the ball well when given the chance he just did't fit what the Bills leadership was looking for in a QB(Tall and white)
