Fed up 5-4 serving for the set is where the match was won for Millman.

If Fed holds there, you have to think the 3rd set is pretty straight forward for Fed as well

Just with the way FED kept making errors, even if he won the 2nd set, I think he would have likely lost the match in 5 sets.

His 5 set record is terrible. 30 - 21. Djokovic is 29-9; Nadal is 20-12; Wawrinka is 26-21; Laver is 17-7.

Most of his peers are better at 5 sets.

Highly unlikely. Fed doesn't lose when up 2 sets to 0. Millman also would have already been defeated after dropping the first 2 sets

Damn Fed was so scared of Novak that he went out before he could play him.

Understandable
Yes that would be the “rational” explanation wouldn’t it?

I am not liking this trend of Fed where he is unable to close when he is ahead by a break. Sampras was one of the best closers of all time. The serve is not as reliable for Fed it seems as it wa son his early years when he is under pressure to hold and close when he is ahead. He gets broken by the easiest of opponents.

In all seriousness, Fed placed the blame on the heat and humidity.

He's lost to Tsonga, Djokovic, and Anderson when up 2 sets to 0.

And to me, he just wasn't playing well. Even if FED won the first 2 sets, he was not playing like he would have won in straight sets. So he would have dropped the 3rd, and I think it could have snowballed from there.

He was playing at about the same level as when he lost to Seppi, Robredo, or Gulbis in majors. If those guys could beat him, then so could Millman.

Was it that hot at night?

yeah it was still hot and humid here in the tri state area last night.

Still beats playing in the day when it was pushing 95 degrees.

In all seriousness, Fed placed the blame on the heat and humidity.

This only translates to Fed being old where his body is not able to handle the conditions. I have seen him handle extreme heat and beat Agassi during the day at heavy and windy conditions. He won Aussie open as well and beat Nadal at Miami before in his prime coming from two sets down.

Great feather in the cap for Millman though by beating Federer. At 37 you have to wonder if Federer's best days are behind him.

Disappointed!! Thiem was playing the better of the two but Nadal is the ultimate grinder. What a lame way to win matchpoint on opponent’s error.
