Gonna throw this out to the board.....see what the response will be. Probably get some smart ones and some troll ones also.
With the 43 million we have available this summer.....do we even need another star(s)?
Maybe a few players like Redick and Jordan......gives us shooting, rebounding, and defense. Redick could score 16-17ppg and Jordan can chip in with 12-13ppg in addition to his rebounding and defense. Plus the kids will be a year older and continue to mature.
This season was a lost one due to the massive injuries we suffered. So is a star even needed or just fill some holes and hope for better health?
It depends. I don't think that using the cap space to just sign guys like Redick and Jordan is really the answer. That would make them better and a solid playoff team, but it's not getting them to the finals, imo.
Your idea could work IF the young guys make big strides in the off-season. I don't mean just regular/natural improvement, I mean "leaps and bounds" type improvement.
The problem with depending on the young guys is that we still don't really know what the Lakers have with them. When they got Lebron, they may not have gone immediately into "win now mode", but they definitely went into "win sooner rather than later mode".
Ingram was finally starting to look like he was worthy of his draft status when he developed the blood clot. If he can keep playing like he was before the clot and the clot is a one time thing (which it looks to be since it was structural), that would help.
Ball is a bit trickier. He is a very good defender with elite vision and passing skills who can't shoot and is injury prone. According to reports, he will be healed up enough by the start of the off-season so that he'll be able to work on the things he needs to for a lot longer than he could last off-season...but until he shows that he can shoot, he can't. And until he shows that he can through a season healthy, he can't.
Kuzma looks really good on the offensive end of the floor and looking to improve his assists is only going to help, but he needs a lot of work on defense.
That seems like an awful lot to have to count on/hope for when you're trying to contend.
