Outside of a final set tiebreaker like they have here at the US Open, is there a more important tiebreaker than the 3rd set tiebreaker after the players split the opening 2 sets?

Andy Roddick once said he thought the 4th set tiebreak was the most important one.

He said either the match evens up at 2 sets apiece, or there's a winner.

But man that Fed miss at 30 all in the final game of the match was so uncharacteristic of Fed

Kind of reminded me of Djokovic missing volleys vs. Wawrinka in 2014 at the AO.

Not necessarily. I think the draw did mess up his head a bit. But he could have pulled DelPo on the other half as well. The five setters also did a number on him.

I don't think the 5 setters did a number.

The Tiafoe match was a quick 5 setter.

Plus the points weren't as grueling.

His movement was fine today. He just made some unfortunate choices with his shots.

right now if I saw Murray anywhere I think I would sock him in his "Mummy" face.

Wawrinka would have been a bigger threat to win the USO than Murray.

Murray hasn't made it to a USO SF since he won it in 2012.

I disagree. It is i very mportant for the guy down 2 sets to 1. The guy up 2 sets to 1 know there is another set if he loses that set. The tiebreaker in a 3rd set of a even match changes the momentum of the match completely IMO

Tennis Abstract can show split results for a player and what his W/L record was when leading 2-1.

FED is 61-32 all-time in a best of 5 when splitting the first 2 sets.

I guess we'd have to manually look through and see what his record is when there's a 3rd set tiebreak and he wins, vs. when he loses.

Tennis Abstract just needed one more filter where we could specify a tiebreak for an exact set. The closest they have is "Deciding TB", which I think only applies to the USO and Rome.

Then if we could also somehow get the ATP average in that scenario.

Would be interesting to see data like that.

I also think Djokovic vs. Wawrinka is a more compelling matchup.

Most of the time when Nadal vs. FED play, it's been clear who's going to win. Even on hard courts. Either FED or Nadal would outplay the other on that day. They didn't have as many tense moments or swings in a match as Djokovic vs. Wawrinka, IMO.

For example, the AO matches Nadal won in 2012 and 2014 were comfortable ones. The ones FED has won this year at Indian Wells and Miami were also comfortable.

That was a great final set. I wanted Venus to win one more major but happy to see Stephens in the finals. Hope she beats whoever wins the 2nd semi finals

very excited to have these two women in the final. Last night's match with Venus and Sloan could be a changing of the guard. I was impressed with how calm Stephens was in closing out that final set and how subdued she was after winning. Still work to be done, but she just beat Venus.

Also, surprised she didn't say something like "I grew up watching Venus" or something cliche like that.

The 2 biggest underachievers in US womens tennis. These 2 were expected to be winning majors years ago and never lived up to their potential. At least one of them will now.

Sloans speed was impressive. That last set was great between them.

I didn't see the earlier Keys vs. Vandeweghe matchups, but based on this one, it might just be a bad matchup. I'll see next time if Vandeweghe can handle it better.

At 37 years old, she made it to the round of 16 at all the majors and made it to SF in 3 of the 4 majors. I'm sorry but when you do that at the age of 37 it is not a disappointing year. I don't care that she didn't win a major. Point is you're not supposed to be doing these things at age 37 in the sport of tennis. She had a great year. Absolutely nothing to be disappointed about.

Agreed. Its not too late for Keys and the days of teenagers being GS champions are probably gone. Seems there has been an age shift in the pro game due to the increased physical fitness levels required to play the game.

agree. her and Serena have been carrying the women's game for so long. It is good to see them still competing and mixing it up, but damn if it isn't time for someone new to consistently win

I don't think she thinks like that though. I don't think she looks at her age and thinks she shouldn't be competing. I think she believes she can. She feels able.
