I think we will bring back Church and Mo. Tough to price both of them. I think Church gets a decent $ and Mo could be anywhere on the spectrum depending on what teams think. After years of not playing too well, He played like an All Pro when healthy in 2016, but then got hurt...again...

Wilcox starting would be horrible. He had some big hits and still just as many plays where he was WAY too late on the back end and still is not good in coverage, but did improve for sure. He would be an adequate reserve again, but if this team goes into the season with him starting and Heath behind him and no cover safety on the bench it will be a disastrous decision IMO. Heath and Wilcox both made some ESPN plays, but are way too inconsistent to play every down.

I am certainly intrigued by Claiborne's development, and he should be cheaper than Carr, but he wouldn't be my first choice. With as thin as the CB depth is Dallas needs a guy that can be relied upon to show up 14-16 games a season - Mo has not proven capable of that. If Dallas was better situated at CB I would be all for bringing Claiborne back, but stability is a must right now. And Carr was pretty decent last year after being moved back to the right side.

Church would be my first choice at Safety, but I am concerned he will be a little too expensive for Dallas. Only so much money to spend and with CB being first priority I think Dallas will go the cheaper route at S.

As far as Wilcox starting, I would have agreed a year ago. I think Wilcox showed a lot of growth throughout the season last year, and really stepped it up, relatively speaking, towards the end of last year. I remember quite a few plays, including a nice pass deflection in the playoff game. Wilcox isn't what I would call a good cover guy at this point, but I think it's fair to say he has developed into an average pass defender at the SS spot - and he is improving.

Sure...I'm down with safety. Not so sure Jones doesn't go back to corner in the right situation. thus I'd prefer corner at 28

Have thought this myself. Marcus Williams from Utah is supposed to be considered a true ball hawk at FS. A lot of the prognosticators see him as a late 1st-2nd rounder. Byron Jones could go back to CB, and Williams could take over at FS - I could live with it.

I don't want another year with (injured) rinse and repeat Claiborne. Time to move on. I would rather bring carr back. He doesn't miss critical games.

Mo wouldn't be my first choice either, but they aren't affording a much better CB and he is younger than Carr. Lee eventually stayed healthy, so who knows. My thinking is Scandrick, Mo, Brown and a high draft pick. I'd also bring in a lesser FA for depth/fight for roster spot. With or without bring back or in a CB I think we spend a to p3 pick there.

Agree on Church getting a lot of money and probably more than he is worth, but that is the FA game at times. I've said for years he would be good if they stopped putting him in situations he isn't made for and put a true CF next to him and he proved that last year. I disagree completely Wilcox is an average pass defending SS, but yes he has developed. Nowadays a lot of SS are hybrid guys so he would be lower tier for sure. Like Church he benefited from Jones and what he was asked to do. He still takes too many bad angles to be as good as Church as a starter, but he has more quickness and explosiveness and I like having someone that keeps the WRs looking around for the big hit. If we teamed him up with someone who could cover better it could certainly work. But if it's him and Heath...God Bless us all...

Regardless of what we do in the defensive backfield it all starts with the pressure up front. The NFL is about getting to the QB and stopping the other team from getting to the QB. If we had a better pass rush we would be much better in the secondary.

don't know and cant say about the FA market and who we resign or don't

AT SS If the Cowboys get the chance to draft Justin Evans from A&M they should run to the podium

That's my fav for SS in this draft

A local radio talk show has said Jones might be better suited at corner pending what talent is added. Hard to say at this time. As usual....I'd like to see two new d-backfield contributors added from this draft. Brown showed himself very well last year and things get so much better if he continues to progress. I don't trust Heath and will continue to pull hard for Wilcox. I'm also intrigued with Frazier. Time will tell this story.

I'd be good with Evans if a top rated corner can't be found. Scandrick seems better suited as the slot, so I tend to lean towards corner but a safety with game is okay by me

Cam Sutton in 3rd or 4rth would be a bargain IMO.

true Colors. None of us do. Heck the team doesn't even have a clue of what will happen once 32 teams get to bid....

:suds:
2 weeks and the gloves come off and I expect us in the 3rd row with popcorn and a Diet Coke waiting for the serious dust to settle. I have no problem with it at all
Pick a FA here and there with a reasonable contract and concentrate on the draft that's how you build the team

In Will and the scouting Dept I trust

To Be real honest I am not impressed with the projected group of DE that should be around at 28 Harris Charlton Mckinnest etc

If no really good corner is their trade down? or pick a Offensive player that might be off the chart value wise ?

The right trade down could net x y or squat

like I said I trust Will and company and Jerry well as long as he is not in the johnny walker blue and Stephen and company are around its been pretty goo the last few drafts

They may trade up a few spots, but you are really down playing those pass rushers. I would be happy with them.

Sorry, this will be long. Got way too involved in this thread today, and spent way too much time on this. Start scrolling now if you don't want to read... (hopefully the formatting turns out okay)

Now, the above are players with active NFL contracts for 2017, currently on the Cowboy roster. Below are players with 2017 NFL future/reserve contracts - these contracts are not guaranteed, and these players were not on the Cowboys active roster in 2016.

* - denotes reserve/future contract

Rod Smith, RB -- $615,000*

Ryan Seymour, LT -- $615,000*

John Lotulelei, OLB -- $615,000*

Jeremiah George, ILB -- $615,000*

Total expense: $8,505,000

Reserve/future contracts are generally reserved for camp bodies and practice squad players. 95% of the guys on the roster with reserve/future contracts will most likely not be on the roster.

The rules regarding reserve/future contracts go like this...

NFL 101: Futures Contracts and the Rule of 51 (start reading at paragraph 5)

Dallas also has two Exclusive Rights Free Agents (ERFA), David Irving and Richard Ash. Those tags come with $615,000 cap hits, if exercised. If Dallas exercises these two tags it will leave them with $11,360,485.
The above quote box is for reference. The few minor errors have been corrected, all numbers are accurate to the best of my knowledge.

Below is an outline of my version of a step by step off-season plan for the Cowboys.

2/22/17: Top 51 Roster (refer to quote box above for top 41 roster spots)

42. Rod Smith, RB -- $615,000*
43. Ryan Seymour, LT -- $615,000*
44. John Lotulelei, OLB -- $615,000*
45. Jeremiah George, ILB -- $615,000*
46. Shaq Evans, WR -- $555,000*
47. Jeremiah McKinnon, CB -- $540,000*
48. Kadeem Edwards, G -- $540,000*
49. Connor Hamlett, TE -- $540,000*
50. Uzoma Nwachaukwu, WR -- $540,000*
51. Sammy Seamster, WR -- $540,000*

Total 2017 Cap Hit (Top 51): $163,526,068
Current Cap Space: $6,875,485

3/9/2017: Free Agency

1. Tender (ERFA) David Irving, DT --- 1yr/$615,000
$615,000 - $540,000 (Sammy Seamster removed from top 51) = $75,000
Cap Space: $6,875,485 - $75,000 = $6,800,485 (current)

2. Sign Brandon Carr, CB --- 2yr/10,000,000 (1st yr 5m/2nd yr 5m)
$5,000,000 - $540,000 (Uzoma Nwachaukwu removed from top 51) = $4,460,000
Cap Space: $6,800,485 - $4,460,000 = $2,340,000 (current)

3. Sign JJ Wilcox, SS --- 3yr/9,000,000 (1st yr 2.5m/2nd yr 3m/3rd yr 3.5m)
$2,500,000 - $540,000 (Connor Hamlett removed from top 51) = $1,960,000
Cap Space: $2,340,000 - $1,960,000 = $380,000 (current)

4/28/2017: Draft

For arguments sake let’s just say Dallas drafts the following positions…

1. CB
2. DE
3. TE
4. WR
6. RB
7. OT
7. DT

All draft picks carry a rookie minimum tag of $465,000 until they are signed. Wait until after 6/1 to sign rookie class. They do not count against the top 51 until signed, as rookie minimum cap hits do not qualify among the top 51 contracts.

6/2/2017: Trade/Release Tony Romo, continue free agency

I am making a few assumptions here, such as contract price and how long these guys will be hanging out in the free agent market, but for arguments sake…

1. Trade Tony Romo for conditional 2018 draft pick
Cowboys acquire additional $14,000,000 in cap space, $10,700,000 in dead money
(-$14,000,000) + $540,000 (Sammy Seamster added to top 51) = (-$13,460,000)
Cap Space: $380,000 + $13,460,000 = $13,840,000

2. Sign Demarcus Ware, DE --- 1yr/$5,000,000
$5,000,000 - $540,000 (Sammy Seamster removed from top 51) = $4,460,000
Cap Space: $13,840,000 - $4,460,000 = $9,380,000 (current)

3. Sign Kellen Moore, QB --- 1yr/$1,000,000
$1,000,000 - $540,000 (Kadeem Edwards removed from top 51) = $460,000
Cap Space: $9,380,000 - $460,000 = $8,920,000 (current)

4. Sign Brice Butler, WR --- 2yr/$3,000,000 (1st yr 1.25m/2nd yr 1.75m)
$1,250,000 - $540,000 (Jeremiah McKinnon removed from top 51) = $710,000
Cap Space: $8,920,000 - $710,000 = $8,210,000 (current)

5. Sign Terrell McClain, DT --- 2yr/$6,500,000 (1st yr 3m/2nd yr 3.5m)
$3,500,000 - $555,000 (Shaq Evans removed from top 51) = $2,945,000
Cap Space: $8,120,000 - $2,945,000 = $5,175,000 (current)

6. Sign Jonathan Cooper, G/C --- 1yr/$1,500,000
$1,500,000 – $615,000 (Jeremiah George removed from top 51) = $885,000
Cap Space: $5,175,000 - $885,000 = $4,290,000 (current)

7. Sign Emergency QB --- 1yr/$1,000,000
$1,000,000 - $615,000 (John Lotuleilei removed from top 51) = $385,000
Cap Space: $4,290,000 - $385,000 = $3,905,000

8. Sign Rookie Class – Approx. $5,500,000 (assume top 5 picks all make the roster)
$5,500,000 - $1,845,000 ( Ryan Seymour, Rod Smith, James Morris removed from top 51) = $3,655 ,000
Cap Space: $3,905,000 – 3,655,000 = $250,000 (current)

SS: J.Wilcox, K.Frazier

Special Teams
K: D.Bailey
P: C.Jones
LS: L.Ladouceur

This leaves the roster fully stocked within budget, with a full practice squad, and a number of camp bodies. Obviously your opinions will differ on how to do this, but this is just a visualization of one way to get Dallas to the preseason, within the confines of the salary cap. It's NOT what Jerry and Stephen will do, but it works.

1. CB
2. DE
3. TE
4. WR
6. RB
7. OT

This leaves the roster fully stocked within budget, with a full practice squad, and a number of camp bodies. Obviously your opinions will differ on how to do this, but this is just a visualization of one way to get Dallas to the preseason, within the confines of the salary cap. It's NOT what Jerry and Stephen will do, but it works.

Forgot to add, prior to May 3, the Cowboys have to declare their intention to exercise Zack Martin's 5th year option. Dallas has to be under the salary cap at the time the option is exercised - it does not effect the 2017 salary cap.

Outside the box idea (a terrible one at that), I know we don't want character issue guys but, what if Revis settles on a plea deal and there's no suspension or disciplinary ramifications from his current run in. If the Jets rid themselves of him and he's cheap, would it be worth a gamble? At this point a transition to safety is the best career move for him. Too much of a gamble considering where we are?

I don't get so involved with any and all possibilities. I'm just a fan but I don't see anyway Dallas adds Revis.
I never thought they would add Owens, so anything is possible I suppose....I just cheer for the star and hope for the best.
