Lebron would have to take a significant discount for the Cavs to bring in another quality player. If Lebron were to simply up and leave Cleveland. They're committed dollar amount to the 9 players they have for next year is $79 million. Lebron can't opt out and re-sign once they has someone signed with that dollar amount.

Cleveland Cavaliers Team Payroll | Basketball-Reference.com

He still has a relatively large cap hold on the roster until he re-signs with the team or if the Cavs renounce his bird-rights. Lebron has also said that he's not taking discounts from here on out - and he shouldn't have to.

Yeah. LeBron isn't looking to do Gilbert any favors financially, you can bet on that. Taking a smaller deal now or later won't allow the Cavs to sign another player, because they will still have Irving, Love, and Thompson on big deals (possibly Smith and Delly too).

LeBron only saves Gilbert from paying luxury tax if he takes less, and there is absolutely no reason for him to want to help Gilbert in that respect.

Everything i've said about him is a fact. Please, prove me wrong!

Okay you're right, whatever. Hey it's been 3 or 4 comments now shouldn't you get back to talking shit about Wiggy? And enjoy that LeBron is a better player than Kobe was as far as I'm concerned. Look up the #'s (they don't lie): LeBron averages more points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, has a better FG %, more League MVP's & more Finals MVP's.

There are very few people that wouldn't say LeBron isn't the greatest SF of all time. But nobody would ever call Kobe the greatest SG of all time. As a matter of fact he's not even the greatest Laker ever, that would be Magic. I also have KAJ ahead of Kobe as far as all time Lakers as well.

LeBron has stated that he feels an obligation to the rest of the players and the union to take the max. I think he will probably stick to that... BUT by giving himself opt-outs every year... he leaves the door open to taking a discount deal allowing the Cavs to go after another big player.

Considering how far they are over the cap, it would have to be a pretty huge discount. It's more likely that he'll do like many expect KD to do. Sign a 2 year deal with a 1 year opt out so that next year he can sign for an even bigger max than he could get if he signed long term this year. I read where if KD does that, he can get something like $229 million over the next 6 years. Pretty sure Lebron is in that same territory.

What makes you think I'm that high about Kobe? There are at least a dozen Lakers I liked more than Kobe - Robert Horry being one of them.

It's not all about overall numbers. LeBron is 6-8 and close to 270, Kobe was 6-6 and maybe 210-220. Naturally, LeBron is going to have more rpg. And he's a facilitator so of course he'd average more apg.

Kobe was a closer in the same vein as MJ. They are 2 different types of players so comparing them is futile.

Agree with all of this. Kobe is the 2nd greatest SG of all time (his bad luck that the GOAT played the same position lol).

Greatest Laker? Definitely Magic with Kareem a very close 2nd.

Lebron is the greatest SF of all time, which pains me to say because I have so much respect for Larry Bird and had him as the greatest SF until Lebron came along.

Never understood the Kobe/Lebron comparison. Lebron has always compared more favorably to Magic and Kobe always compared more favorably to MJ.

Either way, both are in some pretty damn good company as far comparisons.

I don't. Bird was the best SF ever. And that's coming from a big time Lakers fan.

Yep! Anyone who's watched basketball for more than a decade would say the same.

And I have more reasons to dislike Bird than I do lebron.

True and if I am Gilbert, who gives a shit. He has a ton of money, Lebron just won you a championship, he will spend as much as he needs too like in the past 2 years. He is far from done regarding spending his money on this team.

I agree. I'd say LeBron compares more to Pippen than Magic just to keep it as a SF comparison.

Wiggy will back this up. Or not, depending on his mood.

Paying the luxury tax becomes more severe the more you pay it.

I think at this point their is plenty of evidence to point to as LeBron being in the top 5 all time and passing Magic/Bird/Kobe- however- i think their are also arguments that are plausible against it- though i personally would not agree with them--- its not RIDICULOUS or CRAZY to think Bird/Magic/Kobe are ranked ahead of LeBron at this point in time- i think its a weaker case than the case for lebron- but i cant say its not a viable argument.

Before all is said and done though that viable argument will be tore up though i think. LeBron is 31 years old...he has - at least in my opinion- at least 2- and i think up to 5 more Finals appearances in him- and i think in each one its 50/50....if the over under on LeBron titles was 1.5 id PROBABLY have to take the over going forward.

Right now- i think the Kobe/Bird/Magic people still have legs to stand on- even if my personal opinion is those are weak legs. Before all is said and done i think LeBron will cut that argument off though in definitive fashion- unless he falls apart somehow or gets hit by a bus tomorrow.

well...their is a difference between the salary cap and the luxury tax line.

The salary cap is $94M this year. The luxury tax line will prob be around $120M- so- and we will have to see how things shake out- but its certainly possible the Cavs are under the lux. tax line with how much the cap exploded this year.

That should be interesting to see. Admittedly- i am no quite up on free agency and the tax specifics as i usually am for some reason...hmmm....why might that be.... :)
