The draft talk is starting and the first Patriots Mock Draft pick is in. OSU WR Devin Smith is on the board at Walter Draft Picks. At 6 feet, I'm not too sure that Bill Belichick would spend a first rounder on this guy. If he was going to go for a WR I think he'd be looking for one in the 6'4" or 6'5" range.

Wide Receiver

Ohio State

Devin Smith Scouting Report
By Charlie Campbell

Strengths: Very fast
Deep-threat receiver
Skilled at getting separation
Threat to score on any touch
Home-run hitter
Leaping ability
Attacks the football
Able to make contested catches
Stretches a defense vertically
Explosive play-maker in college
Dangerous run-after-the-catch receiver
Quick release off of the line
Plug and play; ready to contribute
Experienced and successful against quality college programs
Good size for a speed receiver

Weaknesses: Needs development as a route runner
A little straight line
Raw
Has to learn to run underneath routes

Summary: The Buckeyes have been known over the past for years for things like a rushing attack led by power back Carlos Hyde, running quarterbacks like Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett, and 2014's breakout stars, Ezekiel Elliot and Cardale Jones. While those players generated a lot of headlines, wide receiver Devin Smith will probably be drafted ealier than any of them. Smith is a deep-threat receiver who could end up being a Thursday night pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Even though he didn't get a lot of opportunities in 2014, Smith made the most of them as he averaged 28 yards per catch. The senior had only 33 receptions on the season, but was a home-run hitter with 12 touchdowns and 931 yards. In 2013, he hauled in 44 passes for 660 yards with eight scores. Smith was a contributor for the Buckeyes as a sophomore (30-618-6) and freshman (14-294-4), too.

Dorial Green Beckham.

WR, 6'-6" 225 lbs runs a 4.3-4.4

Red flags yes, but nothing outrageous. Couple of pot issues that were dropped and pushed open a door that pushed a girl backwards. No charges. His stock has dropped. Bill could pick him up and make sure he flies straight.

Looking at the roster of the Patriots, I think it's pretty easy to see what they are NOT going to do.

Quarterback - Brady and Garrapolo. Nothing needs to be done.
Running Back - Blount, Gray, Vareen (FA), Ridley (FA -Injury), White . No needs here either.
Wide Receiver - Amendola, Edelman, Lafell, Boyce, Tyms No needs here
Tight End - Gronk, Ho-Man, Wright No needs here
OT - Vollmer and Solder. Could use a bigger, faster stronger left tackle.
OG - Connelly (FA) and Wendell are starting to show some wear, Flemming has a great deal of talent and promise, Cannon sucks, Kline played great in the post season but isn't consistent. A quality big guy who can pull would be a good pick.
Center - Stork is the now and future, need a back up.

Defensive Line - Wilfork is getting old. Branch, Siliga, C Jones and Ninkovich are still good. This area needs some back up.
Linebacker - Collins is a stud, Hightower has emerged as the field director and Ayers can play. Mayo could be a casualty, but with two years of injuries behind him, he'll be back next year too.
Corner - Browner and Revis were awesome. Revis is the main resigning that has to get done. Logan Ryan and Malcolm Butler are excellent and as long as he's the slot corner Arrington is top notch. Alfonzo Dennard will be gone.
Safety - McCourty has become an All-Pro and he's critical resign. Chung played better than ever last year and Wilson was a very strong back up.

Placekicker - Gostkowski is a free agent. He's been paid at the top of the PK scale and the Patriots will make every effort to keep him. This might be the focus of the draft in the middle rounds.

It appears right now that if the Patriots don't lose the key key players they need to resign, that the draft has to focus on the offensive line and defensive line. A strong draft here and resigning the critical players should put the Patriots on track to contend for another Super Bowl.

I couldn't agree more. Pats lots two SB's due to crappy Oline play. Brady took a lot of hits.

Any "draft guru" who thinks we should draft a WR with the first pick is an idiot. Kiper has us drafting WR 6'4" Devin Funchess out of Mich. I'm a Michigan guy but we need OL first. I heard this draft is deep with pass rushers.

I agree that we won't take a receiver in the 1st round. Now if we get into the 3rd and get a 6'2" speed burner - downfield threat? Might jump. We don't need another 6'5 receiver, IMHO. We need some speed. If Boyce can learn the game? What does it mean for Dobson and Tyms if we draft a WR?

Some of our O-line are kids on the way up - some are old guys due to slip.
We need a replacement for Wilfork. Siliga is a high quality back-up but not an every down player.

This draft is looking very similar to last year's in there will be a ton of WR talent into the 3rd and 4th round. Because of that no reason to use a premium pick when premium receivers will fall into the later rounds. The opposite could be said of the OL in after the 1st 2 rounds there is a lot of red flags and very inconsistent play. You want a starting quality OL then you are going to have to pay for it with an early pick.

OG, DT, OT & DE are all needs and in that particular order in terms of urgency.

Trenches need rejuvenating & rebuilding.

Huge red flags, IMHO. Remember Josh Gordon? It is not the pot problem, but he could not be coached. Belichick will cut him so why draft him?

Kiper: DGB hurt by Josh Gordon's troubles

Oh, my feelings exactly, 4th rounder maybe, nothing more. He may have more ability than Dobson, may be healthier as well. That's why I would draft him. Late.

No way the Pats take a WR in the first 3 rounds...one they don't need them, second, the 2014 WR draft class is going to have teams thinking that they will find their own OBJ, Evans, Watkins, Benjamin causing the pool to dry up and outpace the "value" that BB covets.

I think the Pats need to bring back Vereen given what he does...Ridley will walk and Blount,Grey and rookie could duke it out for bigger back.

I think this will be an OL,DL,DE heavy draft...Wendell aging, Connelly may be gone, Solder only 1 more year under contract...Wilforks eventual replacement, and someone to spell Nink or Jones.

But if the front 7 player the Pats want isn't there at 32, they will trade the pick for a 2016 first rounder and a mid round pick.

Ya, not sure why NE would even think WR before the 3rd. I agree with most of you, its OL, DL, as top priorities.I think both OG, LT need to be looked at. Also think they should look at CB also, if one falls. I mean Browner wont be here for ever, and it would be nice to see them groom one into a replacement for him. If they can get a 3 down RB who can catch and block, I would be fine with that also.

Agree...But very few CB's or WR's drafted by Bill have made it here. Some have and turned out great (McCourty CB moved to FS, Branch and Edelman) but most are cut or not rersigned after a great rookie year and nothing else.

Analysis

Strengths

Weight-room star who can lift a house. Powerful run blocker with exceptional power in hips and legs. Moves well laterally and rarely allows defensive ends to set edge against him. Consistently gets push. Rolls hips under him at contact and will bring feet with him. Recognizes twists and delayed blitzes. Gets into set position with flat back when delivering punch. Respectable change of direction in pass pro and on second level. Shows second effort and recovery ability in pass pro. Able to hit moving targets in space. Swings hips into position in cut-off blocks. Improved cut-off blocking from junior to senior year. Exhibits composed, efficient movement. Weaknesses

Will default to sumo-style power push rather than leg churning at times. Not a grab-and-control pass protector. Opens the gate earlier than you would like against edge rushers offering two-way goes. Tightly wound lower body with average bend. Sometimes gives one-shot effort on second-level blocks, allowing his man back into the play. Has dominant finishing traits, but not a consistent finisher of blocks. Would love to see more fiery play demeanor from him. NFL Comparison

Riley Reiff Bottom Line

Like former Hawkeye Riley Reiff, Scherff has measurables and traits to play tackle in the league but might be better suited to play guard. More powerful than explosive, Reiff is not a scheme-specific talent and can maul or move in run game. Road-grader with pancake-man potential, but has holes in his pass protection that will be exposed on the next level -- especially at tackle. -Lance Zierlein

Dante is back helping with scouting and attending the combine... which means the Pats will be likely looking to go OL.

Ya, kind of why I said "If" one falls. There is certainly no need to reach for one esp with the depth we have now. Same thing with WR. People seem to forget LaFell was on fire until teams realized they needed to cover him too. He may not have the speed, but he is big WR. I really think for this yr we are fine at CB, S, WR. Need that DL, DE, OL, RB fixed. Would love a 3 down RB to be drafted.

I don't agree with drafting another RB. The pats are fine as long as Vareen stays on board. One of the great strengths of this team last season, was the ability for the offense to adjusts backs depending on the opposing defense. Weak against the run? Send in bruiser backs like Blount and Gray. Strong run D? Send in speedy backs like Vareen and Boldin.
