Nice. Wonder if they were hoping he'd be there or surprises he was there. He's first round talent. Will be interesting to see how they allocate their budget. Never a bad idea to stock up on starting pitching prospects with high ceilings.

Over the past 10 drafts prior to 2015 TEX has drafted more RHP than all position players total. JD noted back in the spring how difficult it was to draft and develop position players. Taking the very best pitcher at every opportunity seems to be a very smart way to go.

I absolutely love the upside and high ceilings with both Tate and Matuella! I see a lot of write-ups on some of these first and second round selections which say they will probably be "decent" or "average" major leaguers. I am so thankful we have our sights set on potential studs with some risk involved instead of safe but somewhat limited players.

Texas Rangers scouting director: We got four of top 20 players on our board | | Dallas Morning News

Rangers scouting director Kip Fagg is normally an enthusiastic, fast-paced talker.

On Tuesday, he was positively frenetic.

“I can’t think of a better day that I’ve had in my 24 years of scouting with the Texas Rangers,” Fagg said after the Rangers selected eight players in rounds 3-10 of the amateur draft. “The first four guys we drafted, we had them all in our top 20 on our board. That’s never happened in my career. That made it special.”

I'm happy that he's happy. Only time will tell.

this has to be the first draft in a while that the Rangers didn't draft a LHP

I doubt this played into their decision on who to draft in any way, but with the jet stream gone in Arlington, I'm not sure LHP are as important as they once were there.

2 LHP drafted so far today and there are still 20 rounds left I believe. Including Adam Choplick who is 6'9" and weighs 250. I can hear the jokes about him licking his chops now.

Oh, Okay. They do have their 6 LHP drafted now and there are still a few rounds to go. So they have continued the trend that Winding mentioned. I don't know how unusual it is for them to not to draft a LHP in the first 10 rounds.

They do seem to shy away from corner players. Only 2 corner infielders drafted so far and only a very few purely corner OF. I would like to see some more Gallos, Davis', Palmers, Blalocks, Morelands, and corner outfielders drafted in the first few rounds. I used to always hear the argument that you couldn't get too many SS because they could be traded for other players, but that hasn't really come to fruition enough to benefit us.

From 2005 - 14 TEX drafted an average of 1.3 LHP in the first 10 rounds of the draft. Most LHP drafted in the first 10 rounds was in 2008 ... Robbie Ross (2), Tim Murphy (3) and Richard Bleier (6).

To the original question ... before 2015 ... in 2012 and 2013 TEX did not draft a LHP in the first 10 rounds.

Bennie -- am getting lots of answers playing with Excel. During the 10 year period 2005-14 TEX drafted 3 1b, 6 3b and 24 OF (of all positions) out of the 112 players drafted in the first 10 rounds to include supplemental picks.

1b (3): Chris Davis (2006/5), Justin Smoak (2008/1), Clark Murphy (2008/5)

3b (6): John Whittleman (2005/2), Matt West (2007/2), Tommy Mendonca (2009/2), Mike Olt (2010, 1s), Joey Gallo (2012, 1s), Jose Trevino (2014/6)

OF (24 all positions):
2005: John Mayberry (2005/1), R.J. Anderson (2005/9)
2006: Grant Gerrard (2006/7), Josh Bradbury (2006/8), Craig Gentry (2006/10)
2007: Julio Borbon (2007/1s), Tim Smith (2007/7)
2008: Mike Bianucci (2008/8), Jared Bolden (2008/9)
2009: Ruben Sierra (2009/6), Braxton Lane (2009/7), Jabari Blash (2009/9)
2010: Jake Skole (2010/1s), Jordan Akins (2010/3)
2011: Zach Cone (2011/1s), Desmond Henry (2011/4), Derek Fisher (2011/6), Rashad Harlin (2011/)
2012: Lewis Brinson (2012/1), Jamie Jarmon (2012/2), Nick Williams (2012/2), Preston Beck (2012/5), Royce Bollinger (2012/6)
2013: none
2014: Doug Votoloto (2014/9)
