33/10 K/BB and .867 WHIP is still damn good for the EL

I like the 10 BB, but 33K in 42.2 IP is a bit low.

I wonder what his GO/FO is?

Either way, he did not exactly come out of nowhere. He was on most radars coming into this season, and so far, he is breaking out BIG TIME!!!

Just like Daryl Maday a few years back...

Considering what happened to Maday after he hit AA, that's not very encouraging. Let's hope it goes a lot better for Heston.

Maday always KILLED AA. It was AAA where he could hardly record an out.

From Baggs Chat today:

Keep an eye on Kelby Tomlinson, a shortstop from Texas Tech. He's the fastest guy in the organization. I predict he'll be moved up from Augusta to San Jose soon.

and :

Jeff Perlman 3:50 PM: Yikes! Gary Brown hitting .237 in Richmond. Is Giants brass concerned, or is it because he's adjusting to Double-A?

Baggs: They should be concerned. I know a lot of scouts don't like the way Brown hits, with his hands pinned against his body. He'll have to make adjustments. Not to say he can't be the everyday center fielder, but he's not on the fast track everyone wanted to put him on.

From Baggs Chat today:

"fastest guy in the organization?"

Brown? Blanco? Pagan?

Kelby was only moderately on my radar, but if he has Brown speed +++ (is this caused by the brown note?), that is impressive.

Then I guess Panik will be moving up to AA, but he isn't hitting that well (but then neither is Ehire Adrianza in Richmond).

I always considered AA "where Maday went to stagnate". He'd have flashes of brilliance for a few starts, but then even it out by sucking. Let me go look it up.

I wouldn't call any of these years from Maday "killing", two of them qualify as "not sucking too bad" :

2008 AA 8.35 ERA, 2.127 WHIP, 5.4 K/9 (only 18 IP)
2009 AA 4.25 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 4.4 K/9
2010 AA 3.47 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 5.5 K/9
2011 AA 4.47 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 7.1 K/9

I saw that. I'm intrigued by Hansley. I think the Gs go pitching heavy in this draft, which means they'll have to grab HS guys.

Yes. Given the option, I favor the Giants' drafting the 6'5" 220-pound teenager that touches 97 and has scouts rating his curve ball higher than his fastball. Put me in the Ty Hensley fan club.

I see them going after Stratton. I saw him pitch against UF, and he was flat out nasty. He's more 'developed' than a HS arm and should be in the bigs faster.
Hensley sounds nice too, though. Really depends on what they want; a potential 1-2 with a lot of risk, or a 2-3 who has a way higher chance of hitting that ceiling.

The fact that a team can't throw first round money at talent that slips makes hitting with the first round pick all that more important.

What can you guys tell us about Roger Kieschnick? He is tearing it up at Fresno.

1.021 OPS 11 HR

He seems to be moving up the minors fast. Cup of coffee in September, given the crowded outfield?

I have mixed thoughts on him.

He has had some success, but he has also been injury prone (back problems). My gut says he is Ben Copeland/John Bowker. However, to be fair, when he has been healthy, he has done real well, and when he was hurt, he was in the EL, so he had EVERYTHING going against him.

There is also the issue, as you stated, of the crowded OF. Not only do we have 5 (8 if you count Huff, Belt and Pill) solid OFers in SF, but we also have Peggy in line at Starbucks as well (not to mention Brown, Parker, Christian, etc).

Good point.

I didn't even bring up Christian, another guy also putting up very nice numbers.
