Benjamin's role in Cleveland
8:36AM ET
Travis Benjamin | Browns

The lack of talent among the Cleveland Browns' wide receiver corps is well documented. Yet, general manager Tom Heckert refrained from adding a free agent or a top draft pick to the position. The lone addition was former University of Miami wide receiver Travis Benjamin -- a fourth round draft pick.

Benjamin is a speed demon with legit 4.3 forty-yard dash quickness. His speed and slight stature invoke comparisons to another Heckert draftee, DeSean Jackson.

"So far, in essentially helmets and shorts, Benjamin looks good," Don Delco of the Orange & Brown Report wrote. "Is he the Browns' version of DeSean Jackson? The stars are lining up to answer, yes, he can, but there is still a long way to go before Sept. 9."

Cleveland opens its season coincidentally against Philadelphia.

Mohamed Massaquoi is expected to start opposite the Browns' top target, Greg Little. Benjamin should push Massaquoi throughout camp to start. Despite the former Hurricane's slight stature (5-10, 175 pounds), the Browns see him playing predominantly outside receiver due to his speed and ability outside the hashes.

Benjamin simply adds a dynamic to the Browns' offense it has lacked for some time -- a wide receiver with the ability to take the top off opposing defenses.

That's kind of strange. I'd think he'd want to be a FA sooner rather than later, assuming he's confident he'll succeed. Especially as an older guy. With three years, he has a shot at two more contracts. But every additional year hurts those odds.

I see your point, but I see the same issue you're addressing (his age) from a different lens. To put it simple - a rookie that old need as much assurance as possible; ensuring that he is vested in for the long haul. Thus, it is in his best interest to go for all the guarantee monies with regard to the 4th year.

Supplemental Draft - 7/12/12

Supplemental draft's top pick
5:18PM ET
Baylor WR Josh Gordon

Gregg Rosenthal at NFL.com has a list of the eight players available in the July 12 supplemental draft, including the prospect he likes most, former Baylor receiver Josh Gordon.

"Gordon is likely to receive the most attention from media and teams in the buildup to the draft," Rosenthal writes. "I spoke with former NFL scout (and current NFL.com analyst) Daniel Jeremiah on Monday, who said that Gordon is building some buzz among teams. At 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds with good speed, Gordon looks the part.

"He produced solid numbers in 2010 at Baylor (Editor's note: 42 catches, 714 yards, seven touchdowns) before getting suspended and transferring to Utah. He turned pro before ever playing in Utah and will have to answer off-field concerns before any team takes a chance on him."

Rueben Randle's playing time
4:09PM ET
Rueben Randle | Giants

The New York Giants' depth chart at wide receiver is clear at the top, where Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz rank among the league's best duos, but murky underneath that. Can Rueben Randle take the third receiver job? The second-round rookie out of LSU will have a chance to win playing time in training camp, but ESPN.com NFC East blogger Dan Graziano says that veteran Domenik Hixon has a better shot at winning the job:

Hixon's credentials

"My pick as the current favorite to open the season in that spot is Hixon, who was the favorite for it last year before re-injuring his knee. I think that, if he's healthy, he's got the best chance to land that position. But that's a huge 'if' with Hixon, and Randle, Ramses Barden and Jerrel Jernigan all have the physical tools they need to impress coaches during this competition."

Tannehill loses QB race
3:58PM ET
Ryan Tannehill | Dolphins

Most observers thought that Ryan Tannehill was a raw project coming out of the draft, so it's not surprising that he has apparently lost the Miami Dolphins' starting quarterback derby.

"Tannehill's workouts with the team have been plagued by untimely mistakes, particularly when throwing into traffic," writes Dan Hanzus of NFL.com. "New Dolphins coach Joe Philbin is trying to build an offense that emphasizes ball security, and Tannehill doesn't appear to be a natural fit at this time, according to the [Palm Beach Post].

"This means Tannehill -- barring a substantial turnaround in training camp and the preseason -- likely will begin the season as the No. 3 quarterback on the roster."

That would leave either David Garrard or Matt Moore as the Dolphins starter.

Protecting rookie QB RG3
11:05AM ET
Washington Redskins

In a piece for RealRedskins.com. Rich Tandler said that so long as Kory Lichtensteiger's knee holds up, the Washington Redskins will have the same starting offensive line they employed last season.

"The pressure is on [Trent Williams] to become a star," Tandler wrote. "At the other tackle, the pressure is on [Jammal Brown] to stay healthy and stay on the field. If he can't [Willie Smith] or maybe even [Tom Compton] could take his job as the year goes on. Lichtensteiger, [Will Montgomery], and [Chris Chester] aren't threats to make the Pro Bowl but as long as they can plug up the middle on pass plays and get out to the next level on the stretch play they will be more than adequate."

The Redskins allowed 10 sacks to the Buffalo Bills in Week 8 last season, but they finished on a strong note by averaging just two sacks per game the rest of the season. That has to be good news for rookie QB Robert Griffin III, whose mobility should help limit the Redskins' sack tally in 2012.
