Kind of surprising, to say the least. Would like to see what positions those were in, seems like either they weren't IMPACT positions or our coaching was just that bad.

Probably a bit of both.

the article says ST's was excluded, but doesn't say if its only 1st team All-Pro?

looked up 2011 and there was Willis and Bowman, Staley is on the 2nd team. we didn't draft Justin Smith nor Carlos Rogers, and Akers is ST's.

looked up 2010 and there was only Willis.

looked up 2009 and there was only Lee on the 2nd team.

i stopped here so maybe missed Vernon Davis? my guess is there isn't another six All-Pro players (non ST's) we drafted 2002 - 2011.

don't think there were any we drafted and made All-Pro for another team? don't think they were counting repeats, would they?

I find your comment interesting because the first thought I had after reading the column was precisely what you asked about our coaching. After this past season, I'm inclined to put nearly all of it on the coaching staff.

i glanced through our drafts 2002 to 2011, and just don't see 10 All Pro's? they must've included ST's despite the article (Cleveland Plain Dealer) saying it doesn't.

if we include ST's, then we can add Lee and maybe Jennings or others like Michael Robinson? but we'd still be short of ten, so seems like they counted repeat All-Pros (Willis)?

if they did fine, just trying to figure out how they got the 49ers at ten (10)? cause right off hand, we could've guessed there weren't many before 2011.

Sure hope they aren't confusing All Pro with Pro Bowl because that is a HUGE difference.

If they did double count then I have to say that is rather disingenuous to not report it. That mitigates the accomplishment of the top of the list and is a kick in the teeth for the bottom of the list.

I think it is a case of it being a badly presented, and misleading, article. The article implies that 2002-2011 is when they were drafted, but the given time frame is for when the players became All-Pros, rather than when they were drafted.

SF have had 10 players, drafted by SF, who were named as All-Pros between 2002-2011:

Brandon Lloyd -- Drafted in 2003 -- All Pro in 2010
Andy Lee -- Drafted in 2004 -- All Pro in 2007, 2009 , 2011
Frank Gore -- Drafted in 2005 -- All Pro in 2006
Patrick Willis -- Drafted in 2007 -- All Pro in 2007, 2008 , 2009, 2010, 2011
Joe Staley -- Drafted in 2007 -- All Pro in 2011
NaVorro Bowman -- Drafted in 2010 -- All Pro in 2011
Terrell Owens - Drafted in 1996 -- All Pro in 2000, 2001, 2002 , 2004, 2007
Jerry Rice- Drafted in 1985 - All Pro in 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2002
Julian Peterson -- Drafted in 2000 -- All Pro in 2002 , 2003, 2007
Fred Beasley -- Drafted in 1998 -- All Pro in 2002, 2003

Perhaps that is what the author meant to write. The article is claiming that we have drafted 10 AP All Pro's since 2002.

Maybe he included first and second team all-pro's...

Yes, I think he counted both the first and second team. He said the Lioins had 4 all-pro's drafted. Suh, Megatron and Eddie Drummond (signed as an UDFA) were first team, but Shaun Rogers was 2nd team in 2004. That makes 4.

That would mean the 49ers have had (in decending order from most recent):

P-Willie
Bowman
Lee
Staley (2nd team 2011)
Gore (2nd team 2006)

Hmmm... that's only 5. I think this is a case of bad research and / or bad writing.

Unless....

He counted P-Willie 5 times, Lee 3 times... Well that doesn't add up either...

Here's my list since 2002

2002: Beasley - Drafted by 49ers in 1998
2002: Owens - Drafted by 49ers in 1996
2002: Newberry - Drafted by 49ers in 1998
2003: Beasley - Drafted by 49ers in 1998
2003: Peterson - Drafted by 49ers in 2000
2003: Parish - Drafted by Bears in 1998
2004: No All Pros
2005: No All Pros
2006: Gore - Drafted by 49ers in 2005
2007: Willis - Drafted by 49ers in 2007
2007: Lee - Drafted by 49ers in 2004
2008: Willis - Drafted by 49ers in 2007
2009: Willis - Drafted by 49ers in 2007
2009: Lee - Drafted by 49ers in 2004
2010: Willis - Drafted by 49ers in 2007
2011: Staley - Drafted by 49ers in 2007
2011: Smith - Drafted by Cin in 2001
2011: Willis - Drafted by 49ers in 2007
2011: Bowman - Drafted by 49ers in 2010
2011: Rogers - Drafted by 49ers in 2005
2011: Akers - Signed as a UDFA by Atlanta in 1997
2011: Lee - Drafted by 49ers in 2004

By my count we have had 5 that meet the criteria of the column:

Gore
Willis
Lee
Staley
Bowman

By my criteria, it was just a shittily written column whose only point was to bash the Browns. Not that I'm against that, per se. I just think the author should have just said,

"Der...Browns suck. Thank you for your time."

I won't read anything more funny than that all day!! Thanks for the great start to my day, Mem.

Yep, I have to agree with your opinion, no matter how you assemble the facts (at least for our data) the numbers just do not add up. And, according the the original article, these are supposed to be different players - at least that is what I take away from this statement:

"Excluding undrafted and special-teams players, 232 different draftees since Jerry Rice in 1986 became an All-Pro at least once over the last 10 seasons."

I am surprised NFL.com doesn't have a better fact checking department, or maybe Danny boy was in a hurry to meet a DL and just threw this up to see where it landed.

CB or no CB for Lions at No. 23?
11:15AM ET
Detroit Lions

It's a growing consensus amongst NFL observers that the Detroit Lions need to add a CB during the NFL Draft this week; if not in the first round, then soon thereafter. The team lost Eric Wright in free agency, and did not sign anyone to directly take his place. However, given how the club has proceeded in the draft in recent seasons, there's reason to believe that they won't be pushed into a corner at No. 23 overall.

"The whole principle behind it is not reaching for a particular need," Lions GM Martin Mayhew explained last month, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. "There certainly is a balance that exists between need and the best player on your board, but what we don't want to do is reach."

The good news is they won't really have to reach for talented CBs this year; there are a number of solid prospects available beyond top option Morris Claiborne. Depending on how things go in front of the Lions, they could have their choice of South Carolina's Stephon Gilmore, Alabama's Dre Kirkpatrick and North Alabama's Janoris Jenkins (though there have been questions about whether the Lions would actually take Jenkins, given his past legal issues).

Alternatively, they could wait until Round 2 to grab a CB, as they did in Mel Kiper, Jr.'s recent three-round mock, taking Montana's Trumaine Johnson at No. 54 overall:

- Tim Kavanagh

Mel Kiper, Jr.
Johnson will help to fill out the secondary with talent

"The Lions like what they have up front; it's now time to find some playmakers in the secondary. Johnson is a bigger corner who will make plays and is a solid value in Round 2."
