While I know there is already a 2012 prospect thread, this exercise is a little more specific (as opposed to just general prospect discussion), so I decided to start up a new one. One way I like to evaluate the draft every year is to create comparables for every prospect (current or former NBA players; best case/worst case/most likely, etc.). Feel free to criticize/comment on mine, or add some of your own.
Anthony Davis
Best Case: a prime Marcus Camby with a jump shot (with range), a handle, and a baby hook-- which, in my mind, would make him a bigger Kevin Garnett.
Worst Case: I don't see much downside here. A more active, weaker/lankier Josh Smith that makes better decisions?
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
Best Case: a 6'8 Russell Westbrook who doesn't shoot too many perimeter jumpers.
Worst Case: Thabo Sefolosha with a better handle and the ability to finish at the rim in transition (defensive stopper on perimeter that scores 10ppg).
Most Likely: a smaller, quicker Gerald Wallace (whose impact ends up being pretty similar, overall).
Andre Drummond
Best Case: Andrew Bynum? There aren't many guys with that combination of size, athleticism, and soft hands at that age (doubt he ever gets here, for the record).
Most Likely: DeAndre Jordan-- a big body who fouls too much, but clogs the lane, alters shots, and averages in the neighborhood of 8pts/8rebs.
Harrison Barnes
Best Case: Danny Granger-- adequate defender who shoots a lot of jump-shots. Best served as a number 2 on a contender, could be the best player on a .500ish squad.
Most Likely: The obvious comparison (because of his alma-mater) is Marvin Williams with a better mid-range jump shot. I don't mind that, but I will go with a taller version of OJ Mayo. Knocks down the mid range J very well, but doesn't assert himself on the court in any other way and disappears for long stretches.
Tyler Zeller
Most Likely: Jason Smith-- he is most famous for unleashing his inner Patrick Willis on Blake Griffen.
Worst Case: a quicker Brian Zoubek (his career has really taken off, hasn't it?).
Thomas Robinson
Best Case: a more athletic Paul Millsap.
Worst Case: a leaner Brandon Bass with better hands.
Jared Sullinger
Best Case: Al Jefferson, but less of a head case.
Worst Case: a weaker Dajuan Blair with better footwork. Unfortunately, the only reason Blair has had any success in the NBA has been his lower body strength. I see the "worst case" or some approximation of it as the far more likely scenario here.
John Henson
Most Likely: Maybe I can't see past the uniform, but this guy looks like an absolute Ed Davis clone to me (slightly on the weaker side, as well).
Tony Wroten
Best Case: a smaller, healthier Tyreke Evans with better decision making.
Worst Case: a 6'5 inch version of Khalid El Amin. Powerful, but can't break people down and can't shoot. This one is a randon throwback, but for some reason it popped into my head.
That's just a few to get things started...
