TSN confirms.

I thought it was a good hit.

Eh, I'm fine with it. I didn't think the hit was that bad but they made a point that they were going to crack down on head shots so he gets two. Unfortunately I have tickets to the Lightning game on Saturday and now the Sharks will be without thier leading scorer.

I was thinking $2500 fine or at most one game would have been sufficient...I still don't know how Eric Cole escaped punishment for his late hit on Drew Doughty of the Kings a couple of weeks ago.

Soft shoulder pads might have helped.

Meh... I don't know if I agree... it looked like Jim stepped out of the box and let Perron hit him. I guess he could have dropped down to avoid hitting Perron's head, but then again Perron didn't have his head up. Then AGAIN, he was dished out a suicide pass... but at the time it probably looked good. Maybe they should have suspended the guy who opens the door to the penalty box?

The more I think about it, the more I don't like this two game suspension...What's Joe supposed to do, just let Perron fly by unimpeded? He comes out of the box, establishes his position on the ice, and Perron literally skates into him with his head down because he's receiving a suicide pass from a defenseman. Nothing predatory about the hit at all.

As Freddie the Fog Shero said, "If it's fancy skating they want, let them go to the Ice Capades"

$2500 fine okay, but then should have been it.

If I could I would, but I can't so I won't. I must spread it around. Agree whole-heartedly about this. Defenseman put Perron in a bad position. Not just because I'm a Sharks fan either. If there had to be a suspension so that the league could mean business, it should have been 1 game tops (most likely just a fine). I've watched it over and over again and it looks like Jumbo just stood his ground after exiting the box.

Plus if Thornton was 5'11, would this even be an issue? It sure wouldn't have been any sort of head shot.

How come when Captain Concussion Chris Pronger doles out elbows to the dome, he "can't help it because it's just physics and he's so big and tall it's not his fault", but Thornton gets two fucking games for standing there?\

Ask Dean McAmmond if this is fair.

Don't think it warranted a suspension based off the fact that Perron basically just ran into him. But under the rules it was considered a "blind side" hit because his head hit Joe's shoulder. Personally I think the suspension is a complete joke. Was expecting maybe a fine and nothing more. I guess people feel differently about this hit.

The more I look at the hit, the more I think that Joe could have at least attempted to make it look like he was trying to avoid it. But if you watch the video again, and stop it at :56 seconds and Joe lowers his shoulder towards Perrons head. Now there are other ways to brace yourself for a hit and other ways to avoid such contact with the head. It sucks either way, the NHL is really making a statement early on in the season.

This does nothing but help Joe Thornton's reputation. At least in my eyes.

I guess the league has to set and maintain a precedent on these hits, but this wasn't a guy flying across the ice and exploding through a guy from the blind side like most of the hits that led to the creation of the rule. I think Thorton took all of a stride and a half and just cruised into Perron's way, and while he braced himself for the hit, he actually gave ground after contact rather than exploding through. Two games is too many. One maybe, but not two.

He shouldn't need to. Hitting with the shoulder should be allowed, when the dude's got (or recently had) the puck.
the "blind-side" part wasn't Joe's fault. imho, you fundamentally change the game when you force a player in Joe's situation to avoid contact.
