I think the Sox are looking to extend Pedroia now because they are worried that Cano is going to get a whopping deal from the yankees and it's going to plant a seed in Pedroia mind about how much he should get.

With the Sox positional guys in the minors and a potentially strong lineup core for years to come, I'd think they need to begrudgingly pass and invest big dollars in pitching

It's why I'm really torn on it...he's worth every bit of that (as much as any ball player is) as long as he remains healthy...but yes, the sox are in desperate need of an "Ace" that can pitch for more than 2 consecutive months at a time...
