With the Sox positional guys in the minors and a potentially strong lineup core for years to come, I'd think they need to begrudgingly pass and invest big dollars in pitching

I think the Sox are looking to extend Pedroia now because they are worried that Cano is going to get a whopping deal from the yankees and it's going to plant a seed in Pedroia's mind about how much he should get.
