He's Dick Groat's great nephew @redseat . Didn't know if you knew that already or not.

I met his dad last year at the Deustche Bank, very nice guy

I was at Beth Page in '02 when Tiger won. It's amazing to be at a major.

The Tiger/Phil battle had to be exciting, in person.

At the time Sergio was in the hunt and doing that fucking annoying regrip regrip regrip thing. From a few fairways away you could hear the crown yelling HIT THE FUCKING BALL!

You know that clip of Tiger holding up the US Open cup in the dark with all the flashes going off? I was standing about 40ft away!

Thankfully he has cut back on that.... I couldn't stand him when he did that. I was Marshalling a few times and every freaking time you had to put your hands up for the crowd to shut up, only for him to back away, go up, do the grip, back and etc.

I've been to 2 legs...don't have a strong desire to go the British, but I do want to go our National Open once before I check out.

Is the Country Club, Brookline?

If so, that, LA CC and Pinehurst are the only non-traditional sites. It does seem like Pinehurst has earned a spot in the rotation though.

Holy shit, is the the most boring dude to ever win a major?

Cripes.

Yep - maybe worst final hole celebration ever. I guess that some might welcome this change after so many of the over-the-top 18th hole celebrations in the past.

After the free-wheeling the guys did at this Open, I wonder what Shinnecock will be like next year. The USGA already has the textbook on how to turn that place into a horrorshow.

Listening to the USGA President just as the round started yesterday I was reminded of the fact that the USGA & the PGA Tour are almost like corporate divisions of the network or networks.

The network wants to see eagle putts and birdies. They want nothing to do with par putts.
Better ratings for the networks is better for a tour that is hemorrhaging viewership.

But it kills a part what made the US Open special.

The US Open should not be the place where the players eagerly go to slay the dragon.
The US Open should be a place were the winner is the only one to make it out of the dragon lair alive.

The USGA is a governing body...maybe even a non-profit organization if I'm not mistaken. I think at one time, they really bought into being the "defender of par" for their major tournaments. I think they have taken a few notes from the Masters, far and away the ratings leader for the sport, and realized that while fans want to see the players challenged, the potential for a back 9 charge with eagle and birdie opportunities has always been an attractive part of the Masters.

They have softened their stance it appears...they have a few venues that are naturally great at defending par, but they are more accepting of others that may not be as stern...Erin Hills has the space for all of the corp hospitality, etc...Merion does not, but it was a much stiffer test...I'm guessing Erin Hills would get it again before Merion.
