From what I've read, it was never intended to tie in with the original Cloverfield movie and was made under a different movie name. They then re-shot and added some scenes to that movie for it to refer to the original Cloverfield.

I was shocked to see Goodman was in it. Reason enough to check it out, tho I doubt in the theater.
