Good question. So whats the solution to get us from a team tied for least points in the league to the Stanley Cup champions?
This guy show waaaay to much passion to play on this team.Former NHL player causes emergency landing for reportedly assaulting flight attendant who denied him drink
We need to sign this guy lol.
#LoseForHughesSmart trades and some good free agency signings.
I would like to hire Q for sure but who knows if he would want to coach these guys after the non energetic season we are having or if we do make trades would he want to coach a mini rebuild.Good question.
I think we need to make some moves at the deadline Simmer, Gudas
Hire Q in the offseason. Hopefully our kids can improve as the season goes on. If not then its time to make some choices in the offseason leading to the draft
i believe Gee would have the most value from this team on the trade market and we wouldn't be trading him while his value is down like we would be doing with every other player on the team.Id like to see more toughness on this team. We lost our identity.
I still think G is the heart of this team.
Jake looks lost.
Couts needs to go back to his role and not be expected to be a 30 goal man. He isnt that on a deep team. He would have a ton of value on the trade market
There is so much wrong with this team it's crazy. If you look at this team on paper you think, Wow, Pretty good squad over all(less goaltenders) but the thing is, a lot of these youngsters haven't played to their hype and some are regressing. The JVR signing was bad on a lot of levels, we didn't really need him versus a solid vet Dman. For what we paid him we probably could have gotten a strong defender/PK'er. The question remains where do things go from here. Do you just say fuck it and play til the end of the season and try to lure in Coach Q and then make some good free agency moves? It's all so frustrating because I still believe it's just a few missing pieces. We def need to start by over hauling the coaching staff.
On a side note, I personally don't have a problem with any one here, and I hope the heated discussions don't become hate filled because I think we all want this team to succeed but we all see things differently.
We ran him into the ground by playing him 2.5 games in a row.I'm shocked he lasted as long as he did.......
This is a perfect scenario but not impossible. Teams can retool on the fly. Hugh's is also possible and could play immediately. They won't sign a coach or dump anyone now makes no sense. Let the new coach bring his guys next year. This year has been a major disappointment for me. I really thought they had a better squad than this. I agree, on paper they look pretty good aside from goaltending. But..
1. Provorov and Ghost have both taken a step back from last year. Doesn't mean they're regressing over the long haul though. They're still talented players, they've proven that. 4 months ago people talked about them as one of the best top pairs in the league. That doesn't just go away, they're just struggling.
2. The defense hasn't, and still doesn't, have the depth to overcome Provorov and Ghost struggling. Gudas and Sanheim have probably been their best defenders this year. Talent wise, Gudas is a 5 or 6, and Sanheim is an inconsistent 4. Hagg is a 5 or 6. So when your #1 and #2 are playing like #5 and #6, you've got no top 4 dmen.
3. The goaltending has been a tire fire. It's impossible to win in the league with the worst sv% from your goalies.
4. The forwards can't score. I blame some of this on coaching, but I think the coaching is trying to overcome 1-3 by having the forwards play a very conservative style. But some of it is a lack of progression. Nolan Patrick hasn't been good. With G on the wing, if Patrick isn't playing well the Flyers have 1 top 6 center, and in all reality, Coots is a #2 guy, not a #1. So the defense can key on Giroux and shut them down.
5. The PP is absolutely snake-bitten. They're creating chances, but they can't score to save their lives. For 10 years the Flyers offense has been driven by a top 5 or top 10 PP. The talent didn't leave, it's still the same group of guys for the most part, they should be good. They're just struggling.
Obviously I'm not blowing this thing up. I'm not, because I don't believe blowing it up makes them better, instead I believe blowing it up adds 3-5 years of misery to complete a real rebuild. If you get rid of the true talents on the team, those guys need to be replaced. It takes talent to win games. So I have to believe those guys can rebound. We have to believe Provorov and Ghost can rebound. We have to believe Patrick can develop at least in to a solid #3 center. We have to believe Giroux can maintain is elite level production for a few more years. The Flyers have depth coming in the prospects. Frost, Farabee, and Allison all look like good middle 6 options up front. Cates, Ratcliffe, Rubtsov, and a handful of others look like they could be good bottom 6 options. On defense, Myers looks like he could be a top 4 guy. Friedman, Zamula, Morin and maybe a couple others look like they could challenge for bottom pair roles. What they're missing in the prospect pool is the elite level talent that you need to win cups. They have that in Giroux, and occasionally Voracek. So what changes do you make to shake things up a little bit and regroup for next year?
Simmonds - 1st round pick
Raffl - 3rd round pick
Voracek - See what the market is for him. He's got a monster contract that makes him more difficult to move. Trading stars with big contracts is risky because the contract brings down the return. That's why you can't do it with all of them, eventually you would water down all the value you had in those players. I'm not trading Voracek (or Giroux) to shake up the team. If there's a deal out there that returns an elite prospect that has a chance of being a star in the near future, then i'd do it. But I'm not trading them for middle aged, decent top 6 players. If they're moved, it needs to be for guys that have the potential to be stars. Otherwise I hang on to the stars I have.
Gudas - I think he's expendable, see below for next years plan.
This season, with the regressions of some of the young guys, could be a blessing in disguise. Maybe you can get some of these guys (Provorov/Konecny in particular) signed for cheaper.
Forwards - 46.2M
Giroux (8.275) --- Couturier (4.3) --- Voracek (8.25)
JvR (7) --- Duchene (8) --- Konecny (4.5)
Frost (.894) --- Patrick (.925) --- Lindblom (.925)Weise (2.35) --- Vorobyev (.784) --- HOLE
Defense - 27M
Ghost (4.5) --- Provorov (6)
Myers (7) --- Sanheim (2)
Hagg (1.15) --- Myers - (.678)
Morin - (.7)
AMac (5) --> Send him to the AHL (have to keep his cap hit)
Goalies - 4.7M
Varlamov (4)
Hart (.7)
That's 62.3M tagged for next year, assuming a couple re-signings (Konecny, Provorov, Sanheim) and a couple prospects making the team (Vorobyev, Myers, Morin). The NHL is projecting an 83M cap for next year. So you can make additions. Maybe you go for a big splash and get Duchene out of Ottawa for 8M x 7 years. He doesn't want to be there. Then the next biggest need is a top 4 dman. What about Tyler Myers from WPG? They don't have the money to re-sign him. What about a 7M x 5 year deal for him? Then you need to address goaltending. Varlamov is a good goalie, will be 30 this summer, goalies don't make a killing any more. Gibson, a 25 year old Vezina candidate is only getting 6.4M (singed in August). Can you get Varlamov on like a 4M x 4 deal?
That's 77.9M, so there's still some work to do, but that's not completely unrealistic and that team looks damn good. Sign a good PK forward for the 4th line and you've got a serious roster construction.
All that, and Gordon is just an interim coach. If you can get Q in the offseason, he brings in his staff. You've got a good/great roster on paper and a hall of fame coach. All of a sudden 2019-20 doesn't look so bad.
Couldn't be any worse than what we have now lol. I really, really hope Nuevy never comes back!Gentleman, meet #7 for the season
Great post my man, only two things I would say are, not sold on Varley, he's very streaky but so is Elliott at times, but he may be the best option. Also Duchene is a defensive liability but which of our forwards isn't lol. I would love Tyler Myers here. He's been solid IMO. Also I would def shop Jake, he's a player I've just never been impressed by. But yea lets see what plays out in FA before we start the gutting. This year has been a major disappointment for me.
