A lefty specialist who allows the majority of the 1st batters he faces to reach is not doing well. His primary job is one and done. I'd call that mission failure.

In this pen you take whatever rays of hope you can

Price's performance reason #14,856 why Wins don't mean much as a stat (especially for starters)

I asked this on the MLB board, has ANY player retired having as good a year as Ortiz? Walked away when he's actually performing pretty much at his peak level? Koufax doesn't count he got hurt. Maybe Ted Williams?

Bonds. But he was kinda forced out.

I cannot think of anyone, outside of maybe Will Clark. However, I don't remember if he decided to retire prior to 2000 or if he chose to honor his early career statement that he wanted to go out on top.

Regarding Ortiz, if he plays out the season as good as he has so far, I'd like to see him come back next year.

Bonds had fallen way off though. I don't mean still effective I mean top of their game or close to it.

LOL no way, you can't do a farewell tour and then say "psyche!"

Hey, Brett Favre did it. So did Michael Jordan.

Yeah but they didn't say before the season started "This is my last one" and then get showered with love all year (like Kobe, Jeter, Ortiz, Rivera, etc....). They played it out, then said they were retiring after. Jordan did retire but came back a couple years later. Favre just dithered.

Can you imagine if Jeter's like "I'm back!" or better yet Kobe? Do they have to give back all the swag from visitors' parks?

Clemente...

Of course, he didn't "walk" away...

Ouch, babe....

That's more of my point....no one just leaves at the top for no reason. Except Ted Williams and Ortiz. Must be a Boston thing.
