Ya great thread, especially the OP claiming UW doesn't put out NFL talent. Now go stand in the corner.

All that "talent", and you're still 2-14 against Oregon in the last 16 games.

Minny has:
Carl Eller, Bobby Bell, Mecklenburg and Charlie Sanders...4 HOFr's. From there it's pretty downhill though.

Oregon has:
Dan Fouts, Mel Renfro, Gary Zimmerman, Dave Wilcox--Haloti Ngata

TBH both universities are pretty piss poor when it comes to NFL talent and HOF talent.

When did Mecklenberg get into the Hall? He's another I could have listed with more Pro Bowls(6) and All-Pro teams(4) than Ngata. Thanks for reminding me of him.

Maybe you meant Leo Nomellini?

And Coaches don't count?

You could say Washington has less HOF talent than these two schools:

Warren Moon, Olin Kreutz, Lawyer Milloy, Mark Brunell, Corey Dillon ---not many HOFr's

Jesus @fredsdeadfriend nobody cares what happened 30 years ago, let alone 80 years ago when the Gophers were actually good at football, consistently. Unless you're like 70 years old, what's the point about bragging about something you didn't see? Hell even if you were alive, there's still a good chance you didn't see it.

So only 8 schools in the whole country have more NFL Hall of Famers than Minnesota, eh?

And if you counted the guy who greets everyone going into the Hall, former Gopher Pudge Heffelfinger, who they honored with a statue somewhere near the entrance to the Hall as the first Pro Football player EVER, as our 8th former player in the Hall, then only 5 schools would have more than UMn, lol.

My dad saw it, remembers it, told me all about it. One reason I'm as big of a fan of Minnesota as I am. He even remembers Nagurski playing for the Bears.

History of the game counts for something. The mystique of Notre Dame goes back to Knute and the forward pass. And the Gipper. And Rudy. And Frank Leahy. In the history of the game, Minny counts high

All that history means little to me, because I'm alive now. ND being a national power 60 years before I was born, really doesn't do me a lot of good.

I grew up watching Gopher football, basketball and hockey, I remember beating #1 ranked Michigan 16-0 in 77, I remember the 70s Gopher bb teams that won Conf titles, were #1 in natl attendance, and sent boatloads of players to the pros. I remember watching guys like Bobby Bell, Carl Eller, Gale Gillingham, Charlie Sanders, Mecklenburg and Upchurch dominating the NFL. At least 4 of those guys made the All-Star team the same year, 4 years in a row! I remember watching Mychal Thompson on the Lakers and Kevin McHale on the Celtics both battling for NBA titles. I followed the Gopher Hockey team as they won 3 Natl Titles in Hockey and probably enjoyed the Miracle on Ice just a little bit more than any of you seeing half the team was made up of Golden Gophers!!!

And no school in the country is hurt as much as Minnesota has been over the years as Hockey is our #1 sport and every 4 years we lose some of our best players who need to take the whole year off to compete in the Olympics. Summer Olympic athletes don't have to skip a year of school to compete, only winter Olympic athletes, and no school in the country sends more players to play on the Olympic Hockey teams than Minnesota, and it's not even close, either. UMn has sent TWICE as many as all the other schools in the nation, except for Boston U.

How do you think Michigan, Notre Dame, etc., got to be blue bloods?

Not because of what they've done recently as ND's last title was what, in 88? And Michigan's last outright Title was in 1949? Not discounting their shared title in what, 97? Just saying, lots of programs dominated cfb much more so than Michigan between 50-96. But it was their history that gave them their mojo, and was what helped carry them through to today. Otherwise, without all that history, what has Michigan done in the last 70 years to make them deserving of more respect than all the teams that won at least 2 titles since 1950? Even Mich St has 4 or 5, Nebraska and Oklahoma, Texas, USC, etc.. And yeah, Bama, OSU & Clemson, of course. And all of those teams, minus MSU & Clemson, had history going way back. MSU made their own history for a couple decades but just couldn't gain the traction against their rival with really only history going for them. Clemson's making their own history now. Miami and Florida and Florida all made their own history and are considered by many now to all be blue bloods, but all 3 of them could also fall out of the blue blood talk with one bad decade of football, whereas Michigan may never drop off that list?

Their giant stadium full of fans doesn't hurt, either, but it wasn't always that big, it grew over time, as did their fan base.
