True. I'll give coach GQ a lot of credit for sticking with David Gibbs. And credit to Gibbs for sticking with Tech. Both of them were criticized big time the past few years. But they inherited a 100% mess. While not super duper great, they are playing very hard on that side of the ball IMO.

More a criticism on Lincoln, he knew they had major issues on defense and did nothing to fix it. I think the issue is cultural, like at Tech, and can not be fixed by a new DC. It needs to start from the HC

I think it is a bit of a default pick. Everyone thought Michigan would be improved with that defense and Shea coming to town. Nobody expected that the division would be down. Coming into the year 90% of CFB fans and writers had it pegged as the best division in football. Then MSU and PSU happened. Somewhere along the line Ohio State forgot how to play defense

3 undefeated P5 coaches

Nick Saban, Bama
Brian Kelly, ND
Dabo Swinney, Clem

Undefeated Mid-Major and 1st year

Josh Heupel, UCF

Other CFP contending coach

Mike Leach, Wazzu
Jim Harbaugh, Mich
Lincoln Riley, Okla
Kirby Smart, UGA
Urban Meyer, OSU - I know, off-season issues will keep him from winning. But I will put him in anyway.

Less than 3-loss Coaches

Dana Holgorson, WVU
Matt Wells, Utah St
Luke Fickell, Cincy
Ed Orgeron, LSU
Jeff Monken, Army
Bill Clark, UAB
Lance Leipold, Buff
Bryan Harsin, Boise
Jeff Tedford, Fresno
Scott Satterfield, App St
Bill Clark is probably the most deserving. There was no UAB program 2 years ago.

I say

Nick Saban - probably will never win, but I think he should be front-runner.
Mike Leach - probably will win.
Jim Harbaugh
Mike Wells
Jeff Monken

Year after year ... it's almost boring ... gotta give credit to the coach!!!! Nick Saban!!!

Lincoln Riley. The defense has allowed more penetration than a $10 prostitute, yet the Sooners are 10-1...thus far.

It's funny how you give a reason why he shouldn't be considered as a positive like he's the OC instead of the HC.

Nice try, but both sides are on the HC.

All in on UAB Bill Clark.

Alabama Board of Trustees aka Alabama Boosters tried to shut it down.............

Simmering under the surface of this debate is the role of powerful trustees with Crimson Tide ties, including Paul Bryant Jr., the son of the legendary Alabama football coach. To UAB supporters, there is no doubt Bryant Jr. plans to finally kill UAB football before he leaves the board this year after a decades-old feud tied to Gene Bartow, the late founder of UAB athletics.

Bartow accused Bear Bryant of cheating in a letter to the NCAA in 1991.

Just add another thing for the Alabama Board of Trustees to be POd about.

Exactly.

Also — In before OU fans start talking about unstoppable offenses in the Big 12 as the reason their defense is a joke.

I think this is a reasonable take. If OU actually wins out(they wont) and at least wins 1 playoff game, Lincoln Riley deserves the trophy. You can actually make the argument that he would have won both a conference and one playoff game without a defense on the field.

OU offense has been pretty unstoppable vs any defense the last 2 years. Texas is the only team in that span to hold them under 30. The offense is bad ass. The defense is bad and has been ignored for the better part of 2 years

The better question is why did have to win without a defense? He is the head coach, not the OC, so his job is to get the most out of the team

Leach lost his expected starting quarterback to a tragedy before the season and was able to turn into a 10-2/11-1 season. Gotta be him.

Its not the "Alabama Board of Trustees", it's the "Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama".
