Without a doubt. If he risked hurrying back from rehab and got hurt, it’d cost him millions.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Gary holds out and wouldn’t blame him either if he did. But then again, his mom is all about getting his degree, so it wouldn’t surprise me if she made him stay at UM an extra year.
That would be the most short sighted thing that could happen to that kid next to signing with MI.

He can always go back to school after making millions of dollars to finish off his degree.

He was re-evaluated yesterday for the injury. My guess it they told him there's still risk of re-injuring himself if he plays anymore this year. I can't blame him, and from what I've been able to gather, this was never about him being a shitty teammate and only caring about the money. Hell if he was a sophomore, I'm not sure if I'd play again this year depending on what the doctors said. I feel like that's the sort of injury that would be really easy to fuck up if you rush back.

No way Gary stays for his senior year.

I don’t think so either, but his mom is the boss in his life. Education is all she talked about, so while I don’t think he comes back — it wouldn’t surprise me if he did. Not by his choice, but because his mom makes him:dhd:

Once his mom gets a whiff of 20 million guaranteed, my guess is that education will take a back seat. lol.

Homeboy can finish his degree at Princeton once he's done in the NFL if he wants. Hell they'd name a building after him with the money he's gonna make.

Yeah, I never understood the notion of staying to get your education, as if you can't go back later in life. Even if Gary is a complete bust in the NFL, if he's a top 5 pick, he's gonna get like 20 million guaranteed, or in that range. It's gonna cost what another $50,000 to go one more year later on in his life? It's not worth the risk. Jaylon Smith lost out on like 18 million dollars by going from a top 3 pick to a 2nd rounder. Luckily for him, it appears he's back to 100% and will be in line to have a great 2nd contract.

Exactly. Fuck, if I could've gotten a killer job out of college after just 3 years with no degree, you can bet your ass I'd have jumped all over it, just as about anyone I know would've. Especially if I knew there was a risk a year later that something could happen to jeopardize it.

Surely a college degree is a requirement for the NFL. There players seem so...
Edumacated.

Yes the wrong form of Their was intentional.

He can always go back to school after making millions of dollars to finish off his degree.

One of the best sports quotes of all time was when someone asked Al McGuire whether Jim Chones had made a mistake leaving Marquette for the ABA and not finishing his degree.

McGuire said, "If he really wants a degree, he can buy a college and name it after himself like Oral Roberts did."

Agreed.

With the type of injury he had it limits what you can do training-wise so he likely wouldn't get back to playing shape until the bowl anyway, and that's barring any setbacks.

Same here. It's why I don't blame college basketball players who leave early knowing full well they aren't going to be a 1st round pick. You get a 2 way contract you have the ability to make anywhere between 80K-385K. Even if you spend the whole year in the G-League making 80K, that's still a hell of a salary directly out of college. If you make an NBA roster out of college your guaranteed 840K for that first year.

And I agree with your premise about leaving early to secure a great job, in your desired industry.

Exactly. I was listening to the local ESPN affiliate earlier when the news broke, and Bobby Carpenter (OSU LB from the 2000s) was talking about it. He mentioned his conditioning was likely going to be a huge factor in if he was ever gonna play this season, and I'm sure it played a major part. That seems like a horrible injury, and I'm sure he's going to be taking it easy for at least the next 7-8 months or so.

The college basketball thing has always been annoying. If the NBA itself doesn't have a rule against it, there should be nothing holding a player back. People who get upset about it are usually just pissed because they want their team to do better, not that they care about the player's life after they leave the college.

The NBA is the one who put the rules in place to protect themselves from over paying a high school player who only looked good because he was a man among boys. But when they get amongst better players they just flame out.

Same with the NFL. They are the ones who put the rules in place, not the NCAA.

Yeah, I'm all for players being able to enter out of high school again. It won't really change anything. The top 8 players go to the NBA, and the 9-15 ranked players end up going to Duke and Kentucky instead of 1-8. lol. Also, the G League has become more attractive than ever for players, wouldn't surprise me if in the next decade a lot of guys go that route instead of college. You can make 40K minimum with the G League salary, out of high school, get better coaching in the G League, and you don't have to worry about going to school. If you sign a 2 way you can make up to 385K, if you make the roster you get 840K.

Yeah — I agree. His mom is the boss. All she kept saying when he committed was that he’d be getting his degree.

If I were him — I’d do what Bosa did and sit out the rest of the year and enter the draft:suds:

We may be seeing the future of college football.

I remember people criticizing Fournette and and McCaffery for skipping their bowl games a few years back. Many claimed that NFL scouts would not like them abandoning their teams. They both were highly drafted. We could begin to see players quitting teams earlier to protect their bodies for the draft.

Bosa has shown enough to NFL scouts for him to just concentrate on training for the combine in the Spring. He should have finished this year out, especially with his team being #2 ranked, but he seems much more interested in getting that NFL payday, and I don't see this move hurting his draft status.

I respect McCaffrey and Fournette more than a player who fakes an injury to skip a bowl game so he doesn’t hurt his draft stock. If you are going to bail on your team, be upfront about it.
