The play calling is what I meant when talking about a forced balance rather than a natural balance.

If something is working, run it until the opponent stops it. Mix in some other stuff to keep the defense honest. But stick with what's working until it doesn't.

The play calling won't matter all that much until the o-line improves.

Well you guys dominated the first series by running away from where Tago lined up, then the next few series you guys ran at him and got stuffed. It just didn't make sense.

I hear you on the lineman but since you guys switched to the HS offenses it seems lineman will always be an issue. If you go and look at the good lineman in the NFL, most are coming from programs that line up under center...unless it is a former A&M player then they just bust in the NFL.

I don't think the QB necessarily has to line up under center. Most QB's don't very often anymore. The NFL is having the QB under center less and less too.

I'm not even sure that the problem with the o-line is the o-linemen themselves. I think it's more about how they are being coached.

When Pete was the coach, he hired the best o-line coach he could find. Helton hired a friend of his Dad. That's fine if we are seeing positive results on the field, but we're not.

I don't watch alot USC football but the offense you guys were running didn't seem really remotely like a legit offense just in the shotgun.

Just a thought, I obviously no idea what is wrong with your O-line especially since you should have your pick of any one you want west of Texas.

I think it's the emphasis on skill position players. During the sanctions, the decision was made to focus more on skill guys than linemen.

That was fine because with limited schollies, a choice had to be made.

The problem, imo, is that the emphasis is still on skill position players. Prior to the sanctions, we were getting great skill guys AND great o-linemen. We need to get back to recruiting like that.

I also put much of the blame for the o-line on the o-line coach. They just don't seem to be coached up as well as they were when PC was the coach. I mean, we're struggling with the freaking snap from center.

While I love Helton and what he has done as far as stabilizing the program (you'd be hard pressed to find any Trojan who doesn't appreciate that), I worry that he'll be too loyal to his assistants and won't, at the least, replace the o-line coach. That will eventually lead to him being fired and more coaching turmoil that we really don't need.

After seeing them play a few times I don't see Penn St making it to the Rose Bowl unless their conference is really bad this year ( not really keeping track).

Barkley was a once in a decade talent for that school. He was over 50% of their entire offense last year. While they have a really nice QB, they aren’t gonna be anywhere near putting up the ground game numbers they had last year with him gone.

They could make the Rose, but Mich and Wisky could easily make it there as well. Depends how the big10 shakes out and who plays in their conf championship game and outcome.

I assume they lost some guys on defense too.

I’d prefer either of the other two you mentioned for a rose bowl match up, Michigan would probably be my first choice as both a throw back to the 90s match ups, and it’d be nice to beat a Harbaugh team since he’s such a prick.
