Free agent MLB Dont'a Hightower is expected to reach the open market.

Per reporter Tom Curran, there were no "extensive talks" between Hightower and the Patriots down the stretch of the 2016 season. Curran expects the Pats to sketch out the "parameters of what they will offer with the understanding Hightower will test the market." There have been indications Hightower is seeking more than $10 million per season.

There is no reason why we shouldn't offer him a contract. We have plenty of money.

10 mil...hell no

$10 Mil average per season for a 26 year old STARTING caliber ILB, for a team that should be willing to give the left nut AND any resulting children from said named nut for a true starting caliber ILB....

Oh wait.. its GK and money... never mind. :D

I have to wrap my arms around the fact that $10 mil/year is not that outrageous these days for a good starter on the open market.

IF it makes it easier, we gave Norman $15M a year average with $50M fully guaranteed. IM just saying.

He is used all over the place in Boston, not sure he'd be a gamechanger with the current def. coordinator.
PASS! Zach Cunningham will be there waiting:D

And if he is thats great, maybe we draft him. But lets be real... smart teams dont go into the draft saying we need to draft for (X) positions. IF we sign HIghtower, its one less position of need going into the draft, allowing us to draft for BPA.

If we had attempted to put up a legit front line last year, I'd say we were in the "smart team" group
I still don't think he'd come here, too many unknowns, too much downgrades at coaching.

1. I actually think Manusky is an upgrade at the DC spot. I know every one thinks he got the job because no one else would take it. Which could be true. But I think he is better than Barry was.

2. Maybe Hightower would not come here, but I think we at least have to make the effort to secure a legit starter some where other than saying we have no choice but to draft a guy.

1 Apologies -- I don't think the motivation will be here in Washington. Also, if I'm not mistaken N.E. got destroyed on the ground in the superbowl. Yes, Manusky is an upgrade. Can he get the best out of Hightower in one spot?

2 Yeah, I guess I should be at least willing to embrace him if he did want to come here.
I like a bunch of people from OJ Howard to Ramczyk to Cunningham -- so I'm not in that group of Absolutes :D

I think you are slightly missing my line of thinking. We need to get out of the line of progression where we have to draft for need, and cant afford a draft pick to be a miss or a slow developer. When we get to a point where draft day comes and we can really afford to simply draft the best player available, because we dont need to draft a day one starter... we are ultimately a better team all around. IF it went the way I hope, we secure starters at ILB, Across the D-line and at LG well before draft day, so that no matter who is available when we pick, we can take the best player irrespective of position.

So basically, if we became something close to either the Houston Texans, Seattle Seahawks, Kansas City Chiefs, Pittsburgh Steelers, Atlanta Falcons, or New England Patriots during free agency then we wouldn't have to draft for need because we would then have the luxury of drafting BPA, is that right?

Taking in what Stymietee said, and my own line of thought -- I think this can't be accomplished this year.
However "if" I apply your line of reasoning to this draft and cunningham grades out well, he would have to be high on my board. It would be a step in being able to take BPA and not need. At the same time -- I'm not speaking in terms of absolutes with ILB, even if the kid from Alabama was there.

Adding to this, say we do sign Hightower and resign Compton.... it still wouldnt take ILB off the table. And if he were the PBA at that point we take him knowing that we already have two guys capable of starting at the position and if the rookie outperforms one or both, he gets the start any way. Win/Win for us.... well aside from the actual cost of signing Hightower which one or two posters would shit industrial size bricks over if we signed him and he ended up a $10M backup.

That's why I'm not interested. And that's why a few want to pass on Cousins. If we made the playoffs last year,
no one would overreact to this line of reasoning. We CAN'T sign Cousins, get a respectable front 7 and LG(as you mentioned) and then not be strapped for cash the next century.
