The politics surrounding this hire will be very interesting indeed. On the one hand Gruden knows that he has a mandate to get it right this time but that likely signals hiring a more seasoned pro who could position himself to become his replacement in waiting. If he, on the other hand, is not comfortable doing this then the younger guy that he ultimately selects, will be tethered to his future here. So he has to get it right this time, and no matter who's hired, much more attention and money will have to be put into improving the defensive side of the ball.

I hope Gruden is smart enough to know that if he gets this wrong, he's probably gone no matter who he hires. This is the total opposite brand of football Scot likes to play. Look at Seattle and SF. Critical draft and fa for Scot, but an even more critical year and hire for Jay. I have some doubt as to whether it's even Jay's decision anymore.

Jay said he was going to take two weeks and look at everything. Two days later Barry gets blow outta town. This may be Scot's decision at this point. Dan might be like, nah, you had two chances to get this right.

Here is my thinking on Wade in particular. Aside from us sticking to a 3-4 which I think is a bad idea. Is a 70 year old really the guy we want to do a rebuild on our defense at this point?? We are trying to get younger and more talented on the defense. We have seen rumblings of discipline issues and a lack of fundamentals on the defense. Now I have no doubt Wade HAS the skills, I do doubt we have the leadership on the defensive side of the ball to help Wade out though. And lets be frank, who ever gets the job will likely be expected to in one season make the defense at least a respectable middle of the pack unit.

All that being said, Im kind of intrigued by the Phil Taylor signing. He has the size, and at one point was considered talented. If he can stay healthy, might be interesting no matter which scheme we ultimately decide to roll with.

Yeah, Wade's age does concern me as well. That's one of the reasons I like Bradley. I think he could be here a long time.

My nightmare scenario is we spend weeks chasing Bradley and he runs off with the guy in Buffalo, and by that time Wade and Gregg are gone.

I think Williams was told by the Browns they needed a decision by Monday.

Maybe Gregg is waiting on us and we're waiting on Bradley or Guenther. Time is of the essence. They have to be decisive and just pick someone and go for it.

Do you guys really think Gregg would come back here or is welcome back? There was some bad blood and some nasty things said when he left. Snyder doesn't seem like the type to forget. And I bet Gregg knows that.

My gut tells me its going to be a let down as well. Wade Phillips is the best option period. I don't understand how this is even a debate. He has been successful everywhere he has gone. He has the results to prove it.

The fact that we passed on him once was a disaster and if we do it again, Gruden should be fired. The fact that Phillips has any interest in coming here is a miracle. We cannot afford to make the same mistake twice.

Phillips should be the only candidate we talk about at this point. Interview him and offer him the job on the spot. Its simply a no brainer at this point.

Gus would be a good second choice but keep in mind in 4 years, 2 of those years, the Seahawks were a disaster on defense and 2 of the years, they were fantastic. There is no comparison resume wise with Brantly or Phillips.

we switch to the 3-4 because of orackpo.. but most qbs will tell you they hate going up against 3-4
It doesn't matter if The Skins run a 3-4 or 4-3 they have to have a DC who knows how to run a proper defense. The reason everyone is against keeping the 3-4 is because the teams had two dreadful coordinators running it and players who don't gel with those schemes.

If Romeo Cromell was in charge and operating it like he did in New England; Dick Labeau when he was the Steelers defensive guru, nobody would be complaining. Find the best DC and get him the players who fit his philosophy and everything else will take care of itself.

Shanahan said he wanted to implement the 3-4 before he drafted Orakpo.

Orackpo was here before Shanahan became the coach. Gregg Blanch was his DC, who operated a 4-3, and he moved him to outside linebacker.

If we are dead set on running a 34, fine. Just go get a NT and two ILB's. The fact that they want Guenther, and Bradley is reported to be the #1 candidate tells me they want to go back to a 43.

Thanks. I was only sure that we didn't implement the 3-4 for Orakpo. Good catch.

You say it like thats automatically a good thing. Maybe this hire needs to be made based on merit and not just the buddy system.

If its not Williams, Im actually hoping Wilkes gets the gig.
