Head Coach Jay Gruden

** The following is a transcript of a conference call with local reporters this afternoon.**

On his impressions of the team’s play after reviewing the film and how the team could have improved defensively yesterday:

“Well, I think defensively we blew a couple of coverages and then we just lost a couple of one-on-one battles and we also let Aaron [Rodgers] escape out of the pocket and buy a lot of time which put a lot of stress on our secondary. You know, he’s made a career out of that and that’s why he’s one of the best quarterbacks of all-time. I think athletically he just made some plays, which made it hard on our secondary to hold up for so long. But then we also lost a couple of one-on-one battles with their tight end especially and then [Randall] Cobb had a big catch on a third-down play that kept the drive going for a first down. But overall I think we competed pretty well. We’ve just got to do a better job of keeping those athletic quarterbacks like that in the pocket and try to make them throw it on rhythm if we can. Offensively I think there’s a lot to like, really. Like I said, last night, I think the third-down conversions were the key to the game. Kirk [Cousins] was able to get through his progressions. He was able to wait for people to clear, get open, which is huge. [Jamison] Crowder had a couple of big ones. Jordan Reed had a big one. Even DeSean [Jackson] had a huge catch on a quick out on the sideline. So third-down conversions were key and then we got to get the running game going and we did.”

On T Ty Nsekhe’s performance in the last two games:

“I feel great about Ty. Ty had another strong outing yesterday. He blocked two very good players over there and did a great job holding up and then was big and strong and physical in the running game. So I have no complaints over Ty. Like I said before, he’s a starting tackle in the National Football League, without a doubt; we just have two good ones in front of him. So we don’t bat an eye when one of those guys goes down. Ty can fill in at right tackle or left tackle and we don’t miss a beat, quite frankly.”

On the growth of RB Robert Kelley:

“I just think he still gets the tough yards. You know, he turns two-yard gains into three-yard gains and four-yard gains. He just keeps moving the pile, keeps moving his feet and does a great job. He’s a physical runner and obviously his ball security has been outstanding, knock-on-wood. There’s some clean shots that they had on him but he was able to hold onto the ball and get tough yards. And then he’s just patient and then he hit the big one there at the end of the game and put the game out of reach. So we couldn’t be more pleased with Robert. Obviously we’ve got to throw him better balls out in the flat. He had a couple of tough looks at some flat balls but, you know, we’ll keep working on that. But overall his performance was excellent.”

On how tough the quick turnaround will be on the players this week:

“Yeah, we’re not going to deal with them today. They’re just going to come in and get treatment today. I want them to get a nice day’s rest and relax a little bit, get their treatment, get their lift in, and then tomorrow we’re going to grind on them pretty good from a mental standpoint and we’re just going to have a couple of walkthroughs tomorrow. Try to knock out first and second down in the morning and then in the afternoon we’ll have another walkthrough and knock out third down. Wednesday morning we’ll knock out red zone, short yardage and goal line and then fly out of here. The good thing is we are familiar with Dallas. They’re obviously a very, very good team playing at a very high level. But I think we can get our guys ready to roll.”

On the planning and decision-making process for going for it on fourth down:

“Yeah, a lot went into really. You know, the wind had a little bit to do with it. We didn’t want to punt against that wind . Their punter did a nice job punting against it but… Plus, it was less than a yard and we have a very big center, a big left guard, a big right guard and two mammoth tackles and we thought we could get half a yard, we really did. And to punt the ball there and give it back to Aaron Rodgers only up five, they were moving the ball pretty well and had faith in the offensive line. I had faith in the defense if we didn’t get it. “

On if he was ‘right on’ the decision to go for it on fourth down immediately:

“Yeah, I was right on it. We saw how close it was. We asked for the measurement and I think they had an injury, which gave us a little more time to get the play we really wanted from our short-yardage menu. But we got the measurement, saw that it was less than a yard and thought we could get there with a sneak with our big bodies up front.”

On if it is ‘fair’ for a team to play a Thursday road game following a Sunday night game:

“I don’t think it’s really fair, no, but we have to deal with it. We knew this was coming. We had a bye week where we could work on Dallas a little bit, but they’ve played three games since our bye week I believe it is, so we have to try and be up to date with what they’re doing. I just… The biggest thing is you worry about the health of your football team. This is a physical football game we played last night and we’re at the point in the year where guys are a little bit beat up. You look at our injury report and it’s pretty good right now. We’re healthy right now – knock on wood – but guys still have a bunch of bumps and bruises that aren’t on the injury report here and there that they have to take care of their bodies for. It’s going to be tough. It’s going to be tough and not to mention that it’s against I guess the power poll No. 1 ranked team in the league [laughter]. So it’ll be a challenge for us but I have faith that our guys will come out swinging and put up a good fight.”

On if helps playing a divisional opponent when preparing on a short week:

“Yeah, it does, it does. Bad thing is we know how good they are, you know? That’s one thing. They are very good on offense right now. They are playing at a high level. And defensively they’re flying around to the football and getting the job done. But offensively they can control the clock, they can run it down your throat, they can throw it and they’re playing good, like I said. But we are familiar with them. Obviously, we played them already once this year earlier in the season. You know, we had a three-point lead down there in the red zone with about nine minutes to go and threw the pick and they went down and scored and beat us here, so for us to keep pace in the division and have a chance at a division title, we’ve got to play our best game Thursday.”

On if the win ‘meant more’ because of the playoff loss last January:

“Yeah, a little bit, I think so. Being able to hit those plays – like you said and like Kirk [Cousins] said – we left some plays out on the table that we wished we had back and we just didn’t convert on them. When we do convert on them, we’re a tough team to beat. It’s good to hit them. It’s good for the confidence of these guys running these routes down the field to be rewarded with big plays. Now in weeks to come, we call these same similar-type concepts we’ll be flying. Then Kirk will have the confidence to deliver it, and guys will be ready to get the ball and convert. It’s good to see their work pay off, their route-running pay off, and Kirk buying time in the pocket and getting the time and delivering throws, so it’s rewarding especially if it’s a Sunday night game on national television – we haven’t fared too well – against a very good team who had a lot to play for. They were a game out of first place in their division. They’ve hit some rocky times of late, and they were going to give us their best game. We answered the call, which was great to see.”

On if they still have yet to reach full potential:

“Well, we always have room to grow, but you can see the progress and you can see the ability that we have, both in the running game and the passing game. When we have that type of balance, we’re dangerous. That’s why Dallas is 9-1 right now, because they’re playing with great balance. They have Dez Bryant and they have Zeke [Ezekiel] Elliott and Jason Witten. They’re doing an excellent job of keeping you off-balanced with the play-action, the bootlegs, the dropbacks. And we’re in a similar spot right now. It will be a great matchup. I love the way our offense is playing, I love the way our offensive line is playing, number one, and then Kirk, the decision-making and the accuracy that he’s playing with is at a very high level – an elite level – right now.”

On QB Kirk Cousins’ progression at reducing mistakes and making big throws:

“He’s made progression in every area of his game, and he’s continuing to do so. You can see it. It’s ‘Eye in the sky don’t lie,’ so to speak. He’s going through progressions, he’s hanging in there. He had a couple plays in that game that really… the first touchdown to DeSean Jackson, that was his fourth progression. He hung in there and threw a great pass to DeSean. The checkdown to Chris Thompson on third down – which he had to scramble out of the pocket, buy time, Clay Matthews came on a stunt, was unblocked – he made him miss and got two hands on the ball and threw a great pass to Chris Thompson for a big first down. Those plays are really difference-makers as far as the game’s concerned. The more comfortable he gets, and the people around him, and the system – the better he’s going to be. We like where he is, we like where he’s going, [and] he’s going to continue to work, which is also why we like him.”

On how Cousins has been able to improve at extending plays:

“You know, that’s a hard thing to work on. You can work on your feet and all of that stuff – two hands on the ball and ball security and all of that good stuff – but to actually do it with a pass rush bearing down on you, that’s hard to do and that’s a lot of natural, instinctual-type plays that you really can’t coach. But he is getting more comfortable doing it. It’s not like you can say, ‘OK, dropback in this one and let’s hit this one off-schedule.’ You know, it doesn’t happen like that. It just has to be a feel thing and it’s got to be a natural, instinctual thing and he’s getting better at it. And he’ll be the first to tell you he’s still wants to keep working on those plays because those plays are huge. You saw Aaron Rodgers get nine or 10 of them in that game last night. So, we’ve just got to continue to work on them and work on his feet and his ball security, number one, and then when plays happen, let him make them.”

I didn't realize face masks were fined like this. Don't have a problem with this as long as it's being consistently applied. Did that also happen with Crowder and the face mask that nearly decapitated him? Any one know?

I get the feeling its only being enforced if you face mask a QB.. .but I could be wrong.

Head Coach Jay Gruden

On injury update specifically with TE Jordan Reed:

"Yes, he’s going to get a MRI today and then we’ll know more about it tomorrow… I guess or today, this afternoon."

On level of concern with Jordan Reed's injury:

"Well, we’re…You know, we’re sure it’s a….the severity of it, we don’t know and it’s an AC joint separation but we’re going to get the severity of it after the MRI and all the tests and all that good stuff. There is something there that we have to deal with."

On the team’s playoff position:

"Yeah, we…You know we’re not in a spot we want to be obviously in relation to our division but when you’re looking at the big picture you know the object is to get in the playoffs, get into the dance and right now we’re in position but, we still have a lot of work to do. We’re not really focused on the playoffs right now, we’re just trying to take care of one game at a time and we said that all along and Arizona is a very good team with a great running back, hall of fame wide receiver, a quarterback that’s played a lot of plays in his day and a hall-of-fame type corner so that’ll be a great match up for us and a great challenge on the road."

On specific areas to work on in the red zone offensively:

"Yeah, there always is. When you break film down and you watch the plays we didn’t convert on, there’s things we could have done better and maybe called a better play and there’s some execution things we need to work on and continue to get better at. There’s some opportunities that we could maybe had, the scramble drill that we had a chance at, but overall, there are so many good things we’re doing on offense to put a damper on what they’re doing offensively with the red zone. It’s hard to do, but it’s something that is a glaring weakness of this football team right now offensively… if the only weakness that we have. Pass protection has been outstanding. The completion percentage is outstanding. The lack of interceptions and turnovers has been outstanding. We just have struggled in the red zone for whatever reason and defenses have a lot to do with that, execution and play calling, it’s all it is.”

On taking gambles during the game and having an aggressive mindset:

"Well, if you’re talking about the onside kick, you know it’s something that we looked at on tape. We thought we had an opportunity there in the way they aligned. We thought we could get it and we thought it was a good time to get it. We just scored to cut it to five, we had some issues stopping them, they were playing at a very high level offensively, with their running game, their play action and their third down conversions and I thought it was a good opportunity to try and steal a possession quite frankly and we had the look we wanted we just didn’t execute it. It was kicked a little too hard and you know, the field goal, the 55 yarder or 56 yarder, I know [Dustin] Hopkins’ leg, he can make that kick so where do you draw the line? 52, 53, 54, 55, I mean you’re talking about a difference of nine feet and I know he has plenty of leg to get, he had plenty of distance, he just pushed it to the right but I think my mind set is gonna not change. I think we’re gonna be aggressive in all phases of the game. If we see a look that we like we gotta call it, we’re not end the game and say ‘dang, I wish I would’ve tried an onside kick or I wish I would’ve tried the field goal. If I feel like our players can execute, make the plays, I’m gonna give them opportunities too."

On the Cowboys slowing down the run game:

"I think they did a good job. They had great movement upfront; we didn’t handle their movement very good. They were stunting and pirating and all of that stuff, we didn’t handle it very well. Robert [Kelley] ran it extremely hard, I mean he ran hard and his stats do him injustice for as hard as he ran so I’m happy the way he ran the ball. We were having success through the air, in the second half we were down by a couple scores and we felt like through the air was the way to try and make up some chunks of yards and get back in the game which we did. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the stops when we needed them and it didn’t work out but we’re not gonna abandon the running game, just yesterday was just more of a pass attack game because of the situation that we were in."

On missing opportunities in the red zone:

"Yeah, we’re close on all of them. You know, really. We had a couple poorly executed plays in the running game, we mistargeted a run, the linebacker ran right through the gap and almost decapitated Robert and then we had the wildcat play where we snapped it, we mistargeted that one and missed their player right off the edge. It’s the same run whether we handed it to him or just snapped it to him so we thought we would just get the quarterback out of there and try to loosen up the box a little bit and then some of the passes, they covered the one he scrambled out and threw it to Jordan Reed in the back of the end zone where he got injured, they covered that extremely well. They dropped eight and played two deep, not a lot of holes in there but I know we had a fade opportunity that we didn’t throw, we threw the quick stick route to Jamison [Crowder], so we had some opportunities there we just didn’t take advantage of them but we’ll just keep working on them."

On if there was anything that could have been done differently at the end of the first half:

"I don’t know what I could have done differently there. We had one time out left that was all. We completed a second-and-10 I think it was, to get down to the two. I was not going to leave the half without points. It was 17-3 at the time; I was worst case, going to get out of there, 17-6, knowing that we get the ball back to start the third quarter. So, I had only one timeout left, so I let the clock run down to about 10 or 11 seconds in case we had a defensive holding call on third down we would have another shot or two. And then on third-and-2 we chose to throw the stick route to Jamison [Crowder] when we had a chance for the outside fade – DeSean [Jackson] got held and we ended up kicking the field goal. So I don’t know, we wouldn’t have gotten more plays, I just didn’t have enough timeouts."

On the importance of having WR DeSean Jackson healthy at a high level:

"It’s very important. He’s a very important part of this offense. I’ve said all along, sometimes his stats will be three or four catches a game, but his four catches will be for over 100 yards. He does a great job with the big play and sometimes he forces people to put a safety over the top of him, which is great for Jordan [Reed], and great for Jamison [Crowder], and great for the halfback when they catch their ball. He’s somebody that the defense has to be aware of because he can strike at any time throughout the game. He makes our offense that much better. When we can hit a big play or two throughout the game, it changes momentum and does wonders for the rest of the game for us."

On if it was frustrating for the defense not getting stops:

“Yeah, you know, it was frustrating. We had some opportunities on third down – and credit their staff over there and credit Dak Prescott -- he made some plays on third down that were outstanding, buying time. We just couldn’t wrap him up; we couldn’t get him on the grass. There was a couple times where [Ryan] Kerrigan had a shot at him, Ricky [Jean Francois] had a shot at him and we just couldn’t get him down. He just bought time, and Dez [Bryant] made a play. Obviously they had other guys that made plays for them, but Dak was really the guy who kept plays alive. He scrambled for a first down and we had the personal foul in a key situation. [He] scrambled out and hit Dez on third down. It’s frustrating, but sometimes you have to credit the guy who is making the play and that was Dak.”

On the timeout that was called prior to the Dustin Hopkins missed field goal attempt:

“You know, what happened there it was unfortunate because Brandon [Scherff] hurt his ankle [and] he’s on our field goal team and on the play before the field goal he hurt his ankle. So we only had 10 guys on the field. We didn’t know that he was hurt and he’s typically on our field goal team. So we ran Morgan [Moses] out there last second – I think it was going to be a delay of game and I took the timeout there. I probably should have just let the delay of game go off and save the timeout, but instead I took the timeout, I wanted to keep it right there. That’s the reason why. Then, I thought he made the kick. I watched it on my end zone copy here, I thought it was good, but they called it no good.”

On if any other players outside of Jordan Reed are getting any other medical exams:

"I think they’re going to be OK, they’re just going to be sore. There’s nothing major with those guys, they’re just going to be a matter of how they recover from their sprains."

On QB Kirk Cousins’ performance in the past two games:

"I can’t say enough about how good he has played. To go 41-for-51, I think it was, for 430 yards and three touchdowns, no picks, and no sacks, and then last week on Sunday Night to put up the performance that he did. And then not really getting any practice reps against the Cowboys defense throughout the week and go out and do that, that’s really unheard of in a short week against a good team on the road. He’s playing at a very, very high level and we’re obviously excited to have him as our quarterback right now. He just has to keep it up; he just has to keep it up. We’re going to continue to push pedal to the metal, continue to work on the red-zone issues we have as a team, and get better."

** The following is a transcript of a conference call with local reporters this afternoon.**

On injury updates for C Spencer Long and S Will Blackmon:

“Yeah, they’re both in concussion protocol. Spencer Long is and so is Will Blackmon.”

On if DE Ricky Jean Francois’ was injured:

“No, he’s OK. We’ll check him out, but he’s OK. It’s just maintenance.”

On the way he expressed himself after the game and his message to the team:

“I wouldn’t call it anger. I would call it just urgency more so than anger. I think… just try to get them going a little bit more. But I don’t think I was that much different after a loss. I didn’t know you guys were right in the next room over. I don’t think… It just happened after the game. I just want to make sure that we clean up some things and fix up some things and we’re not out of the woods yet. We still have a long way to go but we have to take it one game at a time and take these next days of preparation for the Philadelphia Eagles very, very serious.”

On if the team will need to acquire another center if Long is unavailable:

“I think right now if Spencer can’t go then we’d probably have to make a roster adjustment and we’ll have to see where Kory [Lichtensteiger] is. We’ll have to see. Ronald Patrick’s on our practice squad, that’s an opportunity. [Shawn] Lauvao is our backup center if he can’t go right now, so I’d like to keep him at guard. He hasn’t done a lot of center work, so we’d have to get somebody in here, somebody up.”

On how the offensive line responded to the Cardinals’ blitzes:

“I thought they did a pretty good job. There were a couple times where we got beat man-to-man. Calais Campbell is a very good pass rusher internally. He made a couple good rushes. But for the most part, our offensive line held up and did a decent job. There were a couple times when they got free with some unblocked guys. I thought our backs did a good job against their blitzing linebackers/safeties. But a couple times there at the end, they had one more than we could block and we tried to throw it off-drift and didn’t get them completed. But overall I think our line did pretty good.”

On if he has spoken to T Trent Williams about his return this week:

“I haven’t talked to him yet today, no. We’ll see him tomorrow. They players are off today, so we’ll see him tomorrow. But the plan moving ahead with him is he’s our starting tackle and he’s the best in the business, so we’re excited to get him back.”

On the cause of the third-and-long struggles on defense:

“There’s a couple things, and you can’t point to one guy or one part of the defense. I think it’s a combination of things we’ve said all along – the pass rush has to marry with the pass coverage. Sometimes it’s a coverage, sometimes it’s a rush. We just have got to keep doing a good job with our rush – being consistent with it and trying to get pressure on the quarterback and make him throw it when he’s not ready – and then our coverage has to be tighter from time-to-time, quite frankly. Any time you’re giving up third-and-long, it’s an ample opportunity to get off the field and get the ball back for your offense. We have to really, really focus on that and make sure we do a good job of that here coming up in the future because we’re going to need to.”

On if he would like to get RB Robert Kelley more carries:

“I think there’s no doubt about it, we would like to get more of him involved. We had a couple times where we actually had runs called and we got out of them because their safety was down and they were unblockable as far as the run was concerned. We ideally would like to get that running game going a little bit more – more touches for Robert because he’s been very good as far as running the football. We have got to make sure that we get him more involved, maintain the time of possession and stay more balanced.”

On the status of TE Jordan Reed:

“Yeah, Jordan will be day-to-day. You know, we just have to wait and see. Everybody is different with these types of injuries and hopefully he is a fast healer but we’ll take him day-to-day, get him his treatment and go from there. But I can’t predict it and we’re just going to see him on Tuesday, get him some more treatment and then we’ll see where he’s at on Wednesday as far as practice is concerned.”

On potentially getting RBs Mack Brown and Matt Jones more carries:

“I think if the carries are around…You know, if we get the carries up where we want to, then I think there’s an opportunity for Mack Brown to maybe get some touches or Matt [Jones], whoever it might be. But if we’re talking about 14 carries a game like he’s had the last two weeks, there’s no reason to sub him out because he’s not tired. If we feel like he’s getting a little worn down or something like that, then there’s a chance to sub him out and make sure he’s fresh, but I think for the most part, we’ll stick with him. And, you know, on a game-to-game basis, if we’re getting a lot of carries, if we’re moving the ball with the running game, then there’s a chance those other guys could get some touches.”

On the play of QB Kirk Cousins:

“You know, Kirk did some good things in the game without a doubt and there are some other throws that we didn’t attempt that I wish I think in hindsight I wish he would have attempted. I’m sure we do too. But he’s got the ball in his hands, he’s got to make those split-second decisions, which are easier said than done sometimes. But overall, I think he played pretty good. It was a good pass rush that they had. He handled the pressure fairly well. We’ll just take a look at the film and see if we can push the envelope a little bit more from time to time, but I thought he was efficient and made some good throws.”
