Brewer...

On Thanksgiving Day at AT&T Stadium, Gruden and his staff were on the losing side of four decisions. When an NFL head coach makes one questionable decision, he is sentenced to a half week of second-guessing. Four? In a league built on games decided by inches and fractions of a second, four such instances are problematic.

[Redskins squander chances, and the Cowboys make them pay in 31-26 win]

There was the direct snap to running back Rob Kelley on Washington’s first play in the red zone, a tone-setter for another performance in which the yards (505) didn’t result in enough points. And then Gruden approved of Dustin Hopkins attempting a 55-yard field goal (which would have been a career long), into the blinding sun, even though the kicker had been struggling. And the first half ended with another embarrassing clock-management episode. And with 9:22 remaining in the fourth quarter, Gruden called an ill-fated onside kick after Washington had cut the lead to 24-19.

Red zone play continues to be as big a problem as our D giving up so many points per game.

Scoring points not 'yards between the 20's' remains elusive. Whether it's coaching, scheme, execution...it's not happening. Very frustrating.

I think the coaching has been better than it was last season, but still is not all that great.

I don't understand a lot of the moves that both the D Coord and O Coord make, but this year it seems like it isn't on a quarterly basis (as it was last year), and more like on a half by half basis, on average.

Simply put: some days, McVay calls an excellent game. Some days Joe Barry calls an excellent game. Rarely do they both call an excellent game in the same game. Rarer still do they both call an excellent game, in the same game, for the entirety of the game.

Barry's biggest mistake, as I see it, is not blitzing enough or blitzing creatively. Dropping seven into coverage without a pass rush is not a way to win the game. He doesn't disguise blitzes very well, and isn't very creative in his packages. You COULD say it's personnel, but it isn't all up to personnel. A personnel problem would have the defense to look as sieve like as the Packers did, missing something like ALL of their cb's and safeties.

McVay's biggest mistake this year is as I see it is abandoning the run way too quickly, and not drafting or finding a rb that can hit the hole quickly, break tackles, AND is a homerun threat. Rob Kelley is good enough, but he's not going to outrun anybody. Matt Jones tiptoes too much and is too easily brought down.

I think this is better than it was last year, but still not good enough to clearly outcoach moron coaches like the ginger in Dallas, or rookie coaches like Mr McGoo in NY, or Doug E. Fresh in Philly. Gruden SHOULD be outcoaching them all, but is as much limited by personnel on the defensive side especially, as the boneheaded play calls on offense, or by Joe Barry.

Hmmm. Maybe you should reel that one back. It wasn't like Haslett himself did anything hellified or had the defensive unit punching above its weight. They were shitty when he was here to. Haslett also had a true field general in London Fletcher. Barry has what? Norman Mouth.

Guys, the problem in the red zone is one relating to over-thinking. This can be quantified by the amount of time it takes for the play to be sent in and the offense breaking the huddle. Between the twenties they are in and out of the huddle...no problem. Red zone those extra few seconds tells me that somewhere along the line there is a bit of indecision with which play to run. The other is still no full confidence in the QB. Now, before you jump all over me, that too can be quantified. Have you noticed that they always break a huddle when in scoring position? What does that tell you? If you answered, waiting for a play to be called in, you've won the big deal of the moment prize. Here's my solution: Gruden and company should come up with X (whatever they are comfortable with) number of plays to be run in the RZ each game. No huddle and a simple #5 for example, into the earpiece of KC and they are off and running with this caveat. Depending upon what he sees Kirk can then audible into any one of the other X plays that best suits the defensive lineup. There would be plenty of time to do all of that. Even if they have decided to run an entirely different play those extra seconds forming and breaking the huddle are saved, the defense can't make personnel changes and it instills a sense of urgency in our offense.
