On Thanksgiving Day at AT&T Stadium, Gruden and his staff were on the losing side of four decisions. When an NFL head coach makes one questionable decision, he is sentenced to a half week of second-guessing. Four? In a league built on games decided by inches and fractions of a second, four such instances are problematic.
[Redskins squander chances, and the Cowboys make them pay in 31-26 win]
There was the direct snap to running back Rob Kelley on Washington’s first play in the red zone, a tone-setter for another performance in which the yards (505) didn’t result in enough points. And then Gruden approved of Dustin Hopkins attempting a 55-yard field goal (which would have been a career long), into the blinding sun, even though the kicker had been struggling. And the first half ended with another embarrassing clock-management episode. And with 9:22 remaining in the fourth quarter, Gruden called an ill-fated onside kick after Washington had cut the lead to 24-19.
