C.J. Wilson to undergo shoulder surgery, likely ending his Angels career
Wilson, who has not pitched at all this season due to shoulder trouble, is in the final year of his five-year, $75 million contract

The Angels beat up on the Rays Tuesday night (LAA 13, TB 5), but overall, they are in the middle of an extremely disappointing season. The Halos are in last place in the AL West at 34-50, 11 1/2 games out of a postseason spot. That's with yet another superhuman season by Mike Trout.

On Tuesday, the Angels announced left-hander C.J. Wilson will undergo shoulder surgery, which will end his season. Here is the club's announcement:

"C.J. Wilson will undergo shoulder surgery to address fraying on the labrum and rotator cuff. Surgery is tentatively scheduled for next week in Los Angeles, with Dr. Neal ElAttrache handling the procedure."
Wilson had not pitched at all this season -- not even in spring training -- due to ongoing shoulder trouble. He last pitched in a big-league game on July 28 of last season. Elbow surgery ended his 2015 season early as well.

This is the final season of the five-year, $75 million contract Wilson signed with the Angels during the 2011-12 offseason. They signed him away from the division-rival Rangers in an offseason where Wilson and Albert Pujols were the club's two big additions.

Over the life of that five-year contract, Wilson went 51-35 with a 3.87 ERA (98 ERA+) in 119 starts and 722 1/3 innings. Years 1 and 2 went well enough. Everything went south in the third year and beyond. Wilson accumulated 5.2 WAR with the Halos.

There's no doubt the shoulder surgery hurts Wilson's free agent stock. He's firmly in "reclamation project" territory now. The fact he is left-handed will work in his favor because hey, teams always need more southpaws.

Wilson's five-year contract definitely did not work out the way the Angels hoped. That won't stop some team from giving him a chance to show he's healthy and can contribute in 2017.

They will drop him like a hot potato. JD will pick him up as a reclamation project and he may see the BP for middle relief.

Would rather see Holaday, he hasn't caught since the 26th and is way better versus RHPs than Wilson, who is easily our worst regular versus RHPs
He just got DLed and Hoying has been added.

CJ is 35 and should think very hard of retiring. Do commercials for Head and Shoulders? Ha. I know, as they all do, wants to come back next year.

In other Alumni news Matt Harrison was put on the 60 day DL back in the April by the Phils. Not expected to return this season. His contract goes through next season with an option/buy out in 2018. Liked Matt a lot, hope he gets another chance but the back is just not letting him.

I didnt watch much of this one, but I did see a few AB's late and he called 2 pitches in the same AB that were in the exact same spot, a ball once and a strike 1-2 pitches later. Unbelievable the strike zone was different in the same AB. :trash:

LOL I love that emoticon. Yes I remember those ABs as well. My son does too. :)

There are always going to be the ones on the corners that are 50/50 but I didn't notice anything egregious within the zone, but then again I wasn't paying real close attention all the time

But I've seen way worse recently

Bush got one call low in the zone. Then same pitch up a bit more actually in the strike zone, called a ball. I don't mind when umps are consistently bad. It is when they are inconsistently bad I get my Irish up.

Yes I do recall there being one pitch while Bush was pitching now that I think about it, that was probably it

I also hate when the call the borderline strike inside to LH hitters, but also give the pitcher the strike about 4 inches off the plate in the same AB

I don't know why, but I love that lineup.

I'd rather have Chirinos catching though. Not a HUGE DEAL, just a small personal preference. Actually really like the idea of Wilson/Chirinos as our tandem.

And let me go on the record as a long/loud anti-Profar-at-1st poster....I'm rethinking that Big Time. ha

Well said.....Who didn't like Matt? Great guy, very good pitcher, worked hard to get back......Guy never did anything which would make me not cheer for him to be good, regardless of team.

Yeah I believe that may have been the one. I just know I left the gym and stopped by my office late and was watching the last couple innings, when I said something to one of my employees about isn't that pitch in the same spot as the one he just called a strike"?

It may take some creativity to keep him playing this year and possibly even next year unless a trade is made.

He would be a good BOTR guy who eats up innings as long as we do not have to give up much for him.
