With the Flames winning tonight, I for one am happy to see the Jets keeping pace in the turtle derby.

Looked like shoulder on shoulder :noidea:

I don't think there will be a suspension for a couple of reasons:

1. Hathaway wasn't hurt on the hit (bounced right back up)
2. No penalty called on the play (league hates showing up his officials)

That said, Reaves was angry about a clean check that Hathaway put on him earlier in the game and hit Hathaway making significant contact with his head while he was in a vulnerable position. For all the lip service the DOPS pays to player safety, their actions tell a different story.

NFL refs back NHL refs on Wideman ban

This is funny because I see NFL officials get bowled over by guys trying to make tackles. Are you seriously trying to tell me that the players are trying to avoid the refs when they are chasing down the player carrying the pigskin?

To bad to hear about that 24 yr. old. I know people getting passionate about sports but come on no need to kill someone over a hockey game.

I don't think that's really a fair comparison dash because those are always situations directly involving the play. And you pretty much always see the players either trying to minimize the contact or at least stopping to make sure the guy is OK after.

I'm not going to try to get inside Wideman's head, but it would be an apples to oranges comparison to look at something that's happening right in the middle of the play as compared to something that's clearly away from the play.

Not to be picky Mr. Yzerman, but wouldn't the best way to help your team have been to trade the player for pieces you actually need? :noidea:

I highlighted what I believe to be the key in your post - Both the NBA and NFL officials spokespersons are of the belief that Wideman fully intended to hit Henderson. Have they studied all of the documents in the hearings and were they present to hear all the testimony provided? Or are they basing their judgment on a 6 second vine? Methinks it is the latter.

And yeah, perhaps my comparison isn't the best, but I really don't know why the NBA and NFL are wading into this in the first place. I think they have enough issues within their own league to deal with.

This whole "get inside his head" nonsense needs to end. Show me the evidence that suffering a concussion fucks you up for the first 4 seconds during which you pulverize another human being then lets you play out the final 20 or whatever minutes of a hockey game barely showing any symptoms.

The other ref unions are chiming in because the NHL ref's union is probably going to file some sort of suit against some combination of the league, the Flames and Wideman and asked the other unions to release statements showing "their concern". Politicking, nothing more.

Only evidence I have is the fact that I've had five. And while I won't say that it will make you inherently angry or violent, I can tell you with 100% certainty that you really don't have much of an idea what is going on around you at first.

Worst one I had was a face first landing on a halfpipe ramp. I was actually out and when my friends woke me up, I had zero idea what the fuck was happening around me. 15 minutes later, I hopped on my bike and rode 5 miles home. Where I lost consciousness again (but that was more due to blood loss) and wound up in an ambulance and found out I had a broken jaw too once I got to the hospital.

Look at Indy Car. Driver Will Power had a heavy wreck in practice on Friday. Went out and qualified the car on pole on Saturday and then got out of the car and started puking. Missed the race Sunday and was diagnosed with a concussion late Sunday night.

Every other one I've had was similar. Kinda stunned at first, very disorienting. Then you level off. Then, the next day or later that same day is when it starts to hurt to high heaven. I mean everything hurts. Every noise goes right through your head. Every light hits you like a hammer.

All that said, I think that Wideman has responsibility and needed some kind of punishment. Not pre-deciding to hit someone doesn't change the fact that you did. 20 games is stupid and to paint him as the evil ref hating killer is just stupid. I would have been cool with 10 games as a warning to everyone. The way it dragged out is pathetic.
