Yzerman's got a 3rd overall pick losing value by the day. They're both fucked; how much more fucked one is than the other is pretty irrelevant at this point. It's both terrible asset management and terrible career management.

I commend Yzerman for not bending to the will of an entitled brat. This particular asset may have depreciated, but it sends a strong message to the rest of the guys on his team that playing in the NHL is a privilege, not a right. No one guy is above the team.

It all comes down to draft position for the Jackets. First overall? No brainer. Top 4? Keep the pick and get a solid forward or D man then look to deal Calvert and Atkinson after moving Jenner back to C. Anything from 5 on? Trade it with Johnson or Tyutin and a tasty piece like Rychel or Atkinson and hope to get a top C.

Johnson and/or Tyutin straight up doesn't get it done. But Throw in Atkinson and that first, someone should bite. Especially if a team with a ton of hype falls flat.

Honestly, at this point I'd prefer a 5+ pick and trade. Except over Mathews, of course.

Not as bad as this guy:

That'll be a pleasant conversation.
Personally, I would not trade any lottery pick just to move salary. In this day and age that just sounds nuts.

Lamoriello says intention is to buy out Cowen this summer. Won't be playing a game. #Leafs

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
Jared Cowen won't play again this season because #leafs intend to buy him out in June.

Leafs won't risk him getting injured because you can't buyout injured players. They apparently tried to trade him but failed.

I think the guys on his team wanted him to trade him for a piece to help them win a Cup. That strong message is going to sound hollow when the team's best player walks for nothing this summer after a second round exit.

I have a feeling the reason PAP didn't wind up getting moved was because the Leafs and Hawks were talking about moving Bickell to the Leafs for him and Cowen (so the Hawks could get Cowen's buyout credit). Guess they couldn't come to an agreement on draft picks or salary retention for Bickell.

Could be. I also think the guys on his team are a confident enough group that they could win a Cup without a move and without Drouin.

I watched the Wings trade picks, prospects and veterans for Legwand and Zidlicky at the deadline the last two years and neither guy made the impact they were hoping for. In fact, I'd say both guys kinda messed up some team chemistry. Given Tampa's recent charge up the standings, I'd be hesitant to make a move that could negatively affect the team - unless it's a rock solid return (such as prying Brodin from Minnesota).

That's precisely the return they should've been trying to get. Problem is Yzerman is dealing from a position of extreme weakness so if Brodin was offered the return was probably Drouin and a first. Yzerman likely believes this to be ridiculous (and he may yet be right, but that's of little comfort to his team today). Now, if Drouin sits out all year what's his value at the draft?

Pat Maroon is a bold move by Oilers standards.

/he'll probably get into a fight with Kassian at practice before St. Patricks Day

Because he's better than any of the three guys mentioned above. If he's willing to come back to Calgary on a 3x3 deal, I'd be more than okay with it. Chances are it won't happen and he might hit the jackpot with another team on July 1st, but if he's still available...

Yeah, but losing those 3 players and signing Russell are separate things. Thing 1 I get, but I'd pass on Thing 2 (especially since recent history suggests that 3x3 probably ain't happening anyway, no?)

I agree it likely isn't happening.

We'll probably never know what was actually negotiated for Drouin. Maybe there was an offer out there that would've been great return value, but it also may be that other teams knew Yzerman's hands were somewhat tied and everyone kept lowballing him hard. Tough to tell.

If I put myself in Yzerman's shoes, if there wasn't an offer out there that I was comfortable with, I'd probably just keep Drouin too rather than sell him for the prettiest turd.

Ben Kuzma @benkuzma
Benning talked to the eight teams on Vrbata's limited NTC list and didn't get a single offer, not even a draft pick. #Canucks

And yet Justin Schultz was moved for a 3rd round draft pick :noidea:

This was a disappointing day as a Leaf fan but overall trade season was good for the team. Hopefully they can move JVR, Komarov and Bozak at the draft and then really get this re-build going.

My views on the Leafs trade season:

Phaneuf trade: This actually works for both teams. Well done Leafs.

Polak/Spaling deal: Great job by the Leafs.

Reimer: Turrible.

Winnik: Well done.

Winning 2.5/4 is not bad at all.

CAL is trading David Jones to MIN for Niklas Backstrom and a pick. Holdup was Backstrom NMC.

Jones for a bought pick, that's ok.

/2016 6th round pick, by the way.

Pretty sure Backstrom is not the answer between the pipes although he sounds a little bit like Kipper when he speaks.

/this would have been better if Vancouver had traded for him to go along with the Granlund trade
