ESPN's Adam Schefter reports there "will be no long-term deal now nor anytime soon" coming from the Redskins for free agent Kirk Cousins.

Schefter continues to be adamant that the two sides are no longer discussing a long-term contract. However, the team and Cousins remain friendly, and there's no contentiousness between the two parties. At this stage, it appears the Redskins will be happy to use the franchise tag on Cousins after his breakout 2015 season and make him prove it again on a one-year deal.

I don't know that I am 100% believing Schefter but I will say this. You can't find a bigger Cousins fan than me, at the same time I could understand the Redskins wanting to see another year before paying him long term. If he can repeat the 2nd half of this past season then he can backup the brinks trunk. If it is something less than the Skins can say whoaaaaa.

Don't disagree. The problem is if he plays under the tag this year, it really hoses our cap number up. Which means that other holes we were looking to address this offseason get delayed until the future (or never).

They were slated to pay Griffin a little over $16 million. I think they can survive an additional $3 million if that's what it takes. May way not be the case. I am not in the "sky is falling" bunch. I think there is still a good chance that a deal is done. We all know that these things sometimes get done at the 11th hour.

I also think they will get a deal done. As for Griffins $16m for this coming year, they never expected to pay that. If he played well, they would have already renegotiated that deal into a longer term contract to limit the cap hit for this year.

I will never understand how a team who has had this QB on their team for 4 years has no clue what they have. One full year as a starter and 4 years of practice and they still dont know. How does a team after that still say we need to see more? CaptCoolaid takes another sip of his tasty beverage and scratches head. Yea ya got me... Nuts too.

Really? Ever think it's a negotiating strategy? The fight for a low number and cousins agent makes him sound like the coming of Johnny U. Is either effective? No. It's just part of the dance.

Well...did the KC of years 1-3.5 look like the KC of the last half of this last season? Sometimes the light bulb just comes on.
