This is why getting a guy like Julius Randle makes sense to me. This is not the NBA of 20 years ago- you dont NEED a big center- in fact- a lot of nights- its gonna slow you down.
A big center- clogs the lane, and a big center usually cant get out and cover an opposing big man if that big man can shoot- AND an opposing big center put in the high pick and roll just cant make the play most of the time. Whiteside is a classic example of both of these things.
Now Randle- who can play center on somenights at 6' 10" or 6' 9" or whatever he is- DOES have the athleticism to show hard on the pick and roll - and really- he might even be able to switch and do a decent job on a guard here or there- not for extended periods- but enough to keep them honest- when whiteside would just be useless on a switch.
So yes- Whiteside will block shots, and be a deturrer at the rim, but with the 3 pt shot, and his inability to be quick enough to guard all those pick and roll actions that basically the whole NBA is- you can see why the stats showed the Heat were not as good on defense with him.
and then offensively- and this is where It hink Whiteside COULD eventually improve is developing a post game- right now he has no post game. right now he has no passing game. You cant run an offense through him. And he doesnt stretch the floor. So what does he do offensively? sit in the lane and wait for put backs?
This skill set is just not one that works in the NBA nowadays. It just doesnt.
