I wasn't aware DK is a FA.

Soon as that elbow is ready, he won't be.

I would figure some team will give Kelly a shot at the AAA level....hoping he'd work his way back. AL teams like to have utility players (I guess NL teams do too, really), especially if they can hit left handed. I have not heard anything about a time frame for his recovery....but I truly doubt any team will offer him a guaranteed $2mil for 2016. (Except our resident GM/Pro scout).

I would love to see Dons Swan Song start in Toledo. Or better yet West Michigan.

That's see it start, Id like him back for multiple seasons tbh.

I never said he should get 2 mil iffy... I was saying I would have rather they gave the 2 mil they gave to aviles to don kelly... there is a huge difference there. My gripe is with the fact that aviles is a utility player with shitty defense... and can't hit. When healthy at least don kelly can defend the positions he plays.

both aviles and don kelly should have been minimum salary or minor league contract signings. how does one justify giving more than the minimum to mike aviles at this point of his career?

who gives a shit... the tigers got him for a fringe MLBer.. if he figures it out.. awesome. if he doesn't... who cares.

My sentiment exactly. Marte had to be chucked off the 40-man after the Upton acquisition, and rather than get NOTHING for him, Avila dealt for a younger guy who does not need to go on the 40-man. No big-ass deal if Eaves labors in the minor leagues the rest of his career. Moving on.......

Four straight ALC championships ... Don Kelly leaves, and the Tigers drop to last place. Coincidence? I THINK NOT!!!!!!!! :thumb:

What I liked about Don Kelly was that he'd put the gear on and get behind the plate. Players like Kelly often end up in the coaching ranks....you might get to see him down the first base line for the Whitecaps some day. Don't forget Kelly was a pupil of the great hitting guru - Lloyd McClendon. Perhaps Dazzling Don as a future hitting coach in a post-Ausmus clubhouse???? :)

Hitting coach, no. But I could see him in the Matt Martin (defensive coordinator) role.

I see the Astros signed Doug Fister (1 year for $7mil with incentives to boost to $12mil). I would assume with $5mil of incentives, the Astros are seeing Fister as a swingman...at least to start. The Astros have a lot of depth in the rotation already with Keuchel, McHughes, McCullers, Fiers, Feldman. I wonder if Fister did a throwing session for the Astros (other teams, too?)? His velocity was way down last year - and had dropped the year before. His best role might be in long relief where he can give it his all for 30-40 pitches. These are the kinds of gambles Detroit does not offer venture into....

If Fister gets $7-12mil....think what Cliff Lee might ask for? or Lincecum?

fister never had a big fastball... when he was with the tigers he was barely getting it up over 90 mph. He relies on the fact he is 8 ft tall and the ball is coming at them from weird angles... not mph.

That, and the fact that pretty much everything he throws has movement. I'll take 89-90 with late movement over a straight 95 MPH pitch every time.

Regardless - his velocity is still down over the last two years. (Unless someone wants to argue that it is harder to hit a 78 mph breaking ball than an 85 mph breaking ball). Fister's K/BB ratio has dropped, he is giving up more HRs, and has become less of the groundball pitcher he use to be. I am not saying can't return to form....but I guess no team wanted to gamble more than one year that he will. But $7mil ain't a kick in the teeth....a bit of a stretch in my view....yet might have been a better signing than two years of Pelfrey. But neither Fister nor Pelfrey are anything more than 5th starters....and I can't see paying that kind of cash for 5th starters.

NOW....I am not going to have a long drawn out debate with our resident narcissist. I have stated my views on Fister. I am done.

Injuries tend to affect both velocity AND pitch movement. Just ask Verlander. It really depends if Fister is close to 100% healthy or not. That's why he got a 1-year "prove yourself" deal only.

like was stated... velocity has nothing to do with fister's success... movement and angles are what gets him swings and misses.. he NEVER has had a high k/bb ratio... try looking shit up once in a while before you babble about shit that has nothing to do with reality.

7mil for a veteran pitcher is peanuts.

Baseball Genius :: Who will sign Mark Buehrle?

not sure why detroit didn't go down this route. who knows what he wants... but if you want an innings eater.. buerhle is an all time great innings eater.

Don't know who wrote that article....but he has little knowledge of the D'Backs. Corbin started 16 games (3.67 ERA) last year - so he is NOT coming back from an injury. Unless he just recently fell off a chair or something. As for signing him....I think D'Back money would be better spent on a Howie Kendricks.

Buehrle wants a contending team - not too far from his home in Missouri. I smell Royals? Cubs?
