EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Nothing is unfamiliar here: A blowout loss to the New York Giants, and the Washington Redskinsare now on a different path than the one they hoped to be on just two days earlier.

Pick your season, and it seems to aptly describe what happened after most games in the Meadowlands.

This time, the Redskins can’t get derailed again. If they are a different team, as we’ve heard more than a few players and coaches say, then next week vs. the Eagles will be just as big as the one that just ended with a 32-21 loss to the Giants. When you’re trying to rebuild a program, you'll have big stumbles. Thursday was a massive one that occurred in prime time.

That’s why the national perception of the Redskins remains the same: bad team with a quarterback who turns the ball over too much. Don’t like it? Change it -- with your play. Yet a few of the people who will be ripping the Redskins this morning were probably sizing them up as NFC East contenders before Thursday’s game. So which team are they? In truth, neither. It was too early to stamp them as contenders; you don't get that honor after a home win against a team that hasn't had a winning record in more than a decade. But the signs they showed vs. St. Louis were positive; last night was not. Right now, this is who the Redskins are as a team.

“When we do go back and watch the game, we’ll realize it was us beating ourselves,” Redskins center Kory Lichtensteiger said. “It’s frustrating, but at the same time, it’s encouraging knowing that you did everything except score. We didn’t put ourselves in good situations. ... I think this team has strong enough character that we can respond. We know what we’re capable of. It didn’t go the way we wanted it to, but we’ll learn our lessons and we’ll put it together for the next game.”

Saying you’re a different team doesn’t always mean winning games like Thursday. The reason it’s hard to always believe what you hear is because Thursday followed such a familiar script. The minute that punt was blocked in the first quarter, it was hard to think anything other than "Here they go again." And, of course, there they went.

The key now is to not let it linger. The loss is over; deal with it and move on. The tricky part for fans, of course, is believing that anything indeed is different, because it looked -- and had to feel -- all too familiar. Those who didn’t believe in quarterback Kirk Cousins will scream “See!” Those who want to believe will say “Uh-oh.”

But the troubling part is that the defense didn’t do its job, either. They fed off the ball-control offense the first two weeks, but when that wasn’t working, the defense provided zero impact. Should the entire team stumble if one unit does? Again: rebuilding. There’s little margin for error. Last night, they provided too many chances for the Giants to do what they did.

I agree with most of these. Not so sure the RB carousel is an issue in that many teams use multiple RBs, and jones and Morris are very similar runners. Also not sure that gruden has an anti Griffin demeanor, he just doesn't think he is the best QB on the team. The rest are spot on and summarize my concern about gruden. His teams are usually undisciplined, not ready to play and he does a poor job Of in game adjustments.

I question the anti Griffin thing too but not so sure about now he's handling the RBs. If Alf is your lead dog as Jay states, then why is Jones getting the first carry of this game and then way more snaps. That's inconsistent with what he is saying.

Plus I'm not a fan of this coaching from the podium style Jay has shown since last year with blasting Griffin. This year it's Jordan a few times, Roberts w/drops, Jones w/fumbling etc.

Just don't see how calling them out like that in front of the media is good for anyone but the media.

The difference was that the Giants have an Ace QB and we don't. I don't expect Cousins to be the longterm qb. He has too many mental issues. Prediction: with the Saints cap issues (and this likely being Peyton's last season), I think Drew Brees may be a skin next year as a vet qb similarly to what Palmer is doing in Zona.

I do need to see this season play out more but many of us here have noted that the QB of the future may not be on this roster, so you are not alone in thinking that.

Drew is an interesting thought. Seems unlikely that Scot would go that direction given his age but who knows if the $$ were right.

If Scot is looking for a competent place keeper until your QB you drafted is ready (a couple o years), the Drew is a possibility. But I don't see him leaving NO and Sean Peyton. They are real tight.

If Scot is looking for a competent place keeper until your QB you drafted is ready (a couple o years), the Drew is a possibility. But I don't see him leaving NO and Sean Peyton. They are real tight.

That very well could be true. But the BIG question is will Drew restructure his contract to finish his career?? If not, it opens the door. I was thinking Fitzpatrick or someoen like that would be a viable option. But I like the way Brees sounds better.

It's still early, but it is fair to wonder how much longer the marriage between Drew Brees and the Saints will last.

Coming off his worst performance in a decade and heading into a tough road game Sunday at Carolina, it's worth remembering this factoid moving forward: Brees is scheduled to count a whopping $27.4 million against the Saints' salary cap in 2016.

Making matters worse, New Orleans now is projected to be $7.8 million over next year's cap -- and that doesn't include money the team will have to spend to re-sign its restricted free agents and draft class. By the time that gets done, New Orleans could be about $15 million over the cap, and the money has to come from somewhere. The most likely spot is Brees, which sets up a sensitive decision that will dictate the direction of this franchise in the short and long term. New Orleans either can restructure Brees' contract, creating cap space and keeping its quarterback but suffering further cap ramifications in the future -- or it can move on from him, which would free up $20 million in needed cap space.

Again, it's still early this season. But Brees' play will help determine what this franchise does in the offseason. Brees has been so important to the Saints and the city of New Orleans; his contributions cannot be underestimated. But teams don't pay players for what they have done. They pay them for what they will do. And with Brees struggling in ways he hasn't before, there is a question about what he will do the rest of this season -- and what the organization thinks he can do beyond it.

This is crap. Robert never got benched for doing it once or even 10 times. He did it over the course of 2 seasons with regularity.

I agree it was an accumulation. Don't think Bullock is doing anything other than highlighting how many poor plays we saw out of Kirk in the game, in this case a similar mistake that we've seen from Robert.
