Billy Thompson always played Safety - if I remember correctly.

#14, Louis Wright. I am old enough and lucky enough to have seen him play his whole career at Denver and he was just the best.

from an article about he and Randy Gradishar...

So does Wright, who is punished because he was so unassuming in his 12-season career before retiring close to, or maybe still at, the top of his game. All he did was usually be assigned man-to-man to the other team’s top receiver and placed on an island, while the other 10 members of the Orange Crush went about their business.

Wright had started out at Arizona State, but the gist of a long story was that Frank Kush — the same Frank Kush who became the Baltimore coach and was the reason John and Jack Elway didn’t want any part of the Colts — turned him off and he transferred to his hometown Bakersfield Junior College after his freshman year. Then he went to San Jose State, but as a track sprinter who thought his football career was over. Spartans assistant coach Jim Colbert talked him into giving football another try, though.

Wright was considered a prospect, but he was stunned — absolutely stunned — when the Broncos took him with the 17th pick of the first round in 1975.

Ralston and his staff had seen more in Wright than anyone else had.

One that was really coming into his own was that of Darrent Williams. He made the All-Rookie team his rookie year and then the next season really showed well opposite of Champ. He was one of the few opposite of Champ that I felt like could hold his own.
Darren Williams was going to be a stud IMO. Too bad he left us so young.

Awesome background Wheat - nice job.

I rated Wright the best.

Side note on Wright - I mentioned a few times at KFFL - Louis Wright ended a game against the Chargers by blocking their winning FG attempt - on 2 consecutive snaps on the last play of the game. The first blocked FG was a penalty against the Broncos and reset - and he blocks it again on the very next snap to end the game a Bronco winner.

I remember Ben Smith. He was acquired in one of the trades made by Denver at the time to try to get Elway a ring ASAP. That trade, along with the one for Mike Pritchard, turned out to be a mistake.

I also remember Tory James. He showed promise in his rookie year (1996), and then got hurt and missed the entire 1997 season. I also don't think he played too much in 98, either. He stayed one more year in Denver, and then joined the Raiders in 2000.

Could be. He was before my time... But I just remember in a discussion at KFFL people were talking about him in terms of one of our best CB ever. So if true that person failed my knowledge base. I do have a football card of Louis Wright. A topps card.

Yes and Yes

The Pritchard trade was an interesting one. He was one of those WR's in the run and shoot in Atlanta. He started off well. His first game with us vs the Chargers (we lost) but he had a very good game. Then the next week in practice he lacerated his kidney. Never really was the same after that.

James had a good rookie year here. Spent the next year on IR. Played 4 years for Denver left for the Raiders via FA. Was decent there. Ended his career on the Bengals. Was signed by the Patriots but never made the final roster. He had a nice 9-10 year career as a 2nd/3rd CB.

I will say I do think the Corner combo we have right now is the best we have ever had in Denver. Champ and Harris in 2012 was pretty darn good too but I think right now we have 2 of the top-5 Corners in the game with how they are playing. This week though will definitely be a huge test for them. Maybe no better WR combo they will go up against this year than what we have on Sunday.

I would say without a doubt the CB combo we have now is our best ever. At least in my lifetime and not even close.

It also helps to have a good pass rush. Something we didn't have while Champ was here. Setting up our #2 CB for faliure year in and year out.

Excellent point about how much QB pressure -- or lack of -- affects the effectiveness of DBs. Talib and Harris combine for a top notch CB duo. Ware, Miller, Jackson et. al. can make them historic!

I think something people never really factored in when Dre' Bly struggled at times here was the fact that the CB on the opposite side of him was the best in the game, and our pass rush was the worst in the game. We set him up to fail here.

Agreed. Bly could definitely cover ... but not for an indefinite period of time, particularly playing opposite 24.
