Knew I would hear back from someone. But I did use the words "may be". There is Aaron and Ruth. But Clemente still had some years left and was great all around not just offensively. He was Gold Glove OFer 12 years in a row and won 4 batting titles.

Sorry. I thought you were talking about Ichiro.

No one's ever going to be Ruth, as far as his bat was concerned. But he wasn't considered - not that anyone cared - a good OF. IMO Ruth was the greatest player ever and it's not all that close.

Aaron was a pretty good OF, and his bat was fantastic.

Neither one of these guys could play defense, nor get into the throwing neighborhood of Clemente. But both of em had so much more power then Roberto did. This was a pretty big knock on him, even back then. He only avg 13 HR, with 72+ RBI.

But to me anyway, Celemente was the Ali of baseball. He made a lot of stands on race, compensation, players rights, and was the first Latino player to represent all Latino players. So his accomplishments went well beyond the field of play.

And, as you can clearly see, I was a pretty big fan of his play on the field too.

I still think Mazara has a good shot at being our starting LF next year.

I think he'll start at RR and be called up when someone gets hurt.

With Hamilton in LF that means Mazara could make the club out of ST with Josh on the DL. lol

That thought certainly crossed my mind.

It is amazing how impatient fans can be with young pitching. I can still remember all of the bad mouthing Derek Holland got during his first couple of years in the big leagues.

I've been critical of Chi Chi's inability to put away hitters, yet people gave him the benefit of the doubt, but Martinez, who has very similar numbers does not (he actually has better strike out numbers)

Martinez is a little older than Gonzalez but has not always been a starter, he's got just as big a learning curve as Chi Chi

I see many similarities in both pitchers, so I'm willing to give both some latitude... Martinez's regression is a bit troubling but as many said, including myself, it was bound to happen based on his peripherals

He certainly has adapted to AAA well, it'll be an interesting next couple years with Gallo, Mazara, and Brinson knocking on the door

From a MY interview. The part bolded could have not been said any better.
On Adrian Beltre’s ejection:

“That was ridiculous. All I know is you have a guy that’s been in the big leagues for 16, 17 years in the dugout. Put your mask on, get behind the plate and just say, ‘Ball.’ That’s it. That’s your job. Some of these umpires, I had so many great conversations with them. As a matter of fact, a big majority of umpires are great. I remember saying some stuff to them from the dugout and they wouldn’t even look that way and the next day they’d be over umpiring third base and I’d say, ‘Did you hear me?’ ‘Yeah, yeah’, ‘OK, I’m sorry. I maybe went a little too far.’ (He’d be) like, ‘Don’t worry about it. It’s all good.’ Then we’d get on with our day. The one thing I don’t like about the baseball umpire culture is they feel a need to flex their muscles. You don’t see that in many other sports.”

If Mazara continues to progress, as Brinson may too, I honestly could see the Rangers parting ways with Josh sooner than later.

Although his bat has been quite productive at times, his lack of health - which will only get worse with time - has to be disruptive overall to the team. Recently, he sat on the bench for 3/4 games and was unable to do much more than maybe pinch hit (if that). Any team cannot afford to have a guy occupying a spot on the 25 man roster and basically be unable to play IMO.

Josh was brought back for josh as much as Texas. He may be relegated to part time player/dh duties, but he's most likely here for the rest of his contract.

And this is a really good thing, seriously. I respect the Ranger organization for attempting to assist Hamilton in his daily battle with his demons.

But at the same time I try not to lose sight of the fact this is still a business. And one which can be cold and hard at times.

Look, I'm not trying to run him off. But I do want to be fair to his teammates, and especially whatever player who would occupy his spot. We - all of us on this site - seem to talk a lot about players, especially pitchers I think, and standing in the way of another one's progress. When Hamilton is sitting on the bench, knowing he can't contribute much for numerous games, as he did about a week ago, really hurts the team, overall.

This is all I'm referring too.

I soon may be at the point with Josh as I was with Mitch Moreland to begin this year. That is, it may be getting close to the time just to consider him a backup. Mitch has been relatively healthy this year and I am tempted to change my mind about him, but Josh is in another category altogether. Whatever you get from Josh has to be considered a bonus. You just can't depend on him.

I am tempted to change my mind about Mitch, but I am not convinced yet.

And he could damn near pitch from RF too. One of the best arms ever.

Must say, I sure liked watching Ichiro toss it in from out there too.
Did you ever see Rocky Colivito ( sp) with Cleveland? Best arm I remember.

Word is Alec Asher may be getting to make his MLB debut in September as part of a 6 man rotation in Philly. He has done very well since being traded. He has a 2.08 ERA in 4 outings as an IronPig in the Philly organization.

Agree and every player is there to contribute and when they no longer can, well that's the way baseball goes. I do not see Josh as special as he once was and certainly don't think he is owed any favors. If he can play, fine. If not, cut the cord.

Close enough. I do remember Colavito. Are we showing our age? The guy could hit some HRs. Had a few seasons in the 40's.

Turn on the radio and go to all 3 radio stations that I have preset and everyone of them is talking Cowboys. Go to ESPN-Dallas and it is Cowboys. I know they will have a good team but this is preseason and their starters are sitting for the most part and the Rangers as of now have the 2nd WC spot and are chasing the Astros for the AL West title.
