This doesn't make a ton of sense for either team as far as I can tell. The Jays gave up assets for barely an upgrade at a position which wasn't actually weak, who costs more money, and who isn't a pitcher. The Rockies dumped Tulo's contract only to bring back another bloated salary. They got some prospects, and the term is shorter, but why wouldn't they just go for a haul of elite prospects instead?

Why?

Holy shit, this trade. I don't know how it's possible, but Tulo just upgraded his third baseman. That's crazy. He's a fantastic fit for Toronto.

I hate it because I'm jealous.

INB4 Reyes gets flipped to the Padres for a pitcher.
Please no
Let him go back to the Mets, I heard they need a SS and have some pitching.

As if being a pitching prospect in Toronto wasn't bad enough...

Rockies end up getting Reyes (who they'll likely flip for more prospects & saved $$$) PLUS two top 5 prospects from the Jays. Castro and Hoffman are both highly touted pitchers & there is still one more PTBNL. Colorado did a nice job, let's see what they do with Reyes now and who that last player is.

Honestly thought they should've dealt Tulo & Cargo a couple years ago when they were in their prime for maximum value while the team was struggling but better late than never.

I could see that. Reunite Reyes with his old team, plus they have like a billion pitching prospects that would entice the Mets… they really need some offense.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Troy Tulowitzki and LaTroy Hawkins have been traded to the Blue Jays for Jose Reyes and minor leaguers.

Well, how about that for a late-night surprise? Offense certainly wasn't a need for Toronto given that they are leading baseball in runs by a wide margin, but they obviously saw an opportunity to make a strength even stronger. They're also improving their defense with the deal, as Reyes' defense has really gone south. Tulo is under contract through 2020 with a club option for 2021. Reyes might be flipped elsewhere, as dealing Tulo but then taking on Reyes' contract wouldn't mesh with the Rockies' rebuild. Colorado is reportedly set to receive Jeff Hoffman, Miguel Castro and one other minor leaguer in the deal.

The Mets are not interested in Reyes, or they would have never let him walk to Miami. Plus, they got too many lousy infielders already

Tulo & Turf = Potential Disaster.

This is true. But I do see him performing well in Toronto... Didn't think the Blue Jays would trade Reyes however

This is only slightly about offense and far more about defense. Reyes can't make routine outs. Tulo can.

Time to get pitching.

They said that about Reyes and Reyes didn't get hurt once because of the turf in 3 years.
There's also this:

Yeah, no wiping the smile off my face this morning. Time to get Shark or Cashner! AA has 3 days to go from a GM I have no faith in whatsoever to a Greek god.

If for some god forsaken reason the Mets were interested in Reyes (they're not), Colorado would need to eat a whole lot of salary (they weren't willing to do that for Tulo, not sure why they'd do it for Reyes). There's no way the Wilpons will fork over that kind of dough.

Nothing like being the 6th most valuable franchise with the 20th payroll! It's ironic because if the Mets spent money and got premiere, marketable players they'd be more valuable, people like me might actually pay to see them.
