And barely had a winning record over KU in football, let's not talk about basketball though because there is just no comparison.
How much does basketball actually factor into these decisions?

For KU it will mean a lot, but really the point is Mizzou is really no more of a prize than KU would be, KU basketball brings in a lot of money...so...
Mizzou has a ton more momentum, though. Football brings in more money than basketball which is why KU was left out of the original realignment. Even if Mizzou doesn't win championships, they are a ratings draw because they beat teams and they are producing NFL prospects. KU football hasn't beaten anyone relevant in years, doesn't go to bowl games and hasn't produced a relevant NFL player since Talib.

Since we are talking about college basketball, should we talk about the state of college basketball? What happens to KU's program if high school one and done players think Self isnt the best guy for their NBA transition? The turnaround time either direction in cbb is only about 2 years due to the lopsided nature of one and dones.

I'd bet you that Kansas-Kentucky basketball game would be more of a national draw than any football game Mizzou would ever play in the SEC.

Its an interesting proposition. I've always thought the B1G would be willing to relax their academic standards a bit to admit a school like OU, which really isn't far off from Nebraska when it comes to academics.

Kansas is a curious addition due to the lack to TV network power, but I suppose the thinking is that their basketball brand offsets the lack of population.

For those still wondering about the Rutgers addition, it was reactionary from the ACC's movement. The B1G always had Rutgers in their back pocket in case another big name school came knocking and they needed a moving buddy. 2 Things happened that paved the way for Rutgers' surprise addition:

1. The ACC moved quickly to add former ACC schools which gave that conference ownership of the entire eastern seaboard from Miami up through Boston...minus the NYC/NJ area. The B1G wanted to prevent themselves from getting completely shut out of the lucrative and populous east coast.

2. Maryland came calling: suddenly the B1G had a partner to move with Rutgers, plus it added some more population area and cut the ACC off from capturing the eastern seaboard.

Neither school is likely to be running the roost in either of the big 2 sports, but Maryland will likely be a tourney team every bb season and both schools will be bowl teams each football season. Nothing wrong with that.

Imagine what KU would do though to SEC basketball, that's why I think a lot of people aren't giving that school credit. Yeah, they suck at football except for every 10-15 years or so, but damn if the SEC got them for basketball...or the Big 10 even (but Indiana just ain't what it used to be).

It would be a huge boon for B1G hoops, which is normally the top 1-2 conferences in the nation even though they haven't had a really elite school most years. MSU, Michigan, tOSU, Wisconsin, Maryland, Purdue, Iowa, Minny, and Illinois are all normally pretty decent. Most years, there seems to be at least 1 B1G school in the final 4.

Footballwise, KU brings nothing. OU obviously would be the big prize there, and would immediately provide extra punch in the B1G West that its lacking.

So more than 14.4 million viewers?

Maybe they are decent but not really the national recognition that KU has in basketball. Hell, Mizzou has even less in basketball and like I said before really isn't anything special in football yet the SEC took them anyway.

No, not really the national brand that KU is, but then again there are only like 3-4 schools that have that kind of recognition (UK and Duke being the other 2 stalwarts that immediately come to mind).

The Mizzou addition was perplexing to me and I think they were mostly a happy result for tSEC of needing a partner for A&M.

The SEC saw STL and KC markets and a school that was competent in football, basketball, baseball, softball and wrestling. It was obviously a gamble on the part of the SEC, though, and I dont think the long term results have set in yet.

Yeah, I think I was thrown off mostly by the geography, especially when Mizzou got put in with the SEC East schools.

But, its certainly a great move for Mizzou and so far the SEC cant be unhappy with the athletic results they've gotten from Mizzou.

In three years we've also been part of a new hackneyed sports term (Grown man football thank you Sheldon Richardson) and we gave America an interracial gay kiss with cake. If you're the media, you love Mizzou right now.

How much does basketball actually factor into these decisions?

zero. Not saying it's not important, not saying it doesnt make money.

But football drives realignment- no doubt about it.
